 Texting, is the exchange of brief written text messages between two or more mobile phones or portable devices over a phone network.  Other names…  SMS: Main land Europe.  TMS: in the Middle East and Asia. Text Messaging

 Today, text messaging is the most widely used mobile data service.  In Finland, Sweden and Norway, 85% of the population texts.  The European average is about 80%.  North America is rapidly catching up with over 60% texting on a daily bases. Global Perspective

 A study by the Nielsen Company found that U.S. kids ages 13 to 17 sent and received an average of 2,272 text messages per month, that’s about 80 messages a day (Fanning, 2009). Teen Texting

 Students who text while a lesson is being taught cannot attain the same information as a non texting student; causing grades to suffer.  Text messaging has created an easier way to cheat on exams.  Decreases English proficiency skills. Cons of Texting in Schools:

 High amounts of texting may lead to many problems such as interrupted sleep, and thumb injuries caused by excessive repetitive motion.  Spreading rumors and gossip by text. Text "bullying" of this sort can cause emotional withdrawals and damage reputations. Cons Continued:

 Mr. Klomp used a computer program in his Amityville classroom that allows students to text answers to questions he proposed to them through the website.  This allows the students to become more engaged in the lesson.  Increases learning capability. Pros of Texting in Schools:

 A Harvard study found that 2,600 traffic deaths are caused each year by drivers using cell phones. (Perle, 2010).  Many teenagers and young adults find it hard to cut off the outside world while driving and are constantly tempted to stay connected to others. Texting Behind the Wheel:

 Talk to their children about the dangers of texting when driving.  Set good examples.  Establish strict consequences for breaking the rules. Parents Responsibilities:
