An Introduction To Teaching and Learning Functional English Aims for today: To understand what functional skills are To identify and demonstrate how functional English skills are already embedded within our Apprenticeship programmes. To develop different approaches, which will enable us make learners aware of the functional skills they are already using in their training and work.

What are functional skills? They are essential skills in English, Maths and ICT that enable everyone to deal with the practical problems and challenges in life. English includes; Speaking & listening, Reading and writing. Functional skills are a key to success. They open doors to learning, to life and to work. Unemployed or unemployable, not just for today but for the future. Functional skills are based on a problem-solving approach and should be developed in a practical way through discussion, thinking and explanation, across the whole curriculum.
