UNC Strategic Planning

Background and Goals UNC-system adopts a strategic plan every five years, last was in 2007 Strategic plan sets priorities, guides growth, and helps allocate resources President Tom Ross and Board Chairman Peter Hans started the process at the end of the summer University leadership will use the plan to advocate for the system at the N.C. General Assembly

Planning Process Two committees will collect input 1.Advisory Committee on Strategic Directions  Members are leaders from business and government, also student, faculty and staff representatives  Make suggestions, especially about economy and workforce 2.Strategic Directions Committee  Members are Chancellors and UNC-system staff Plan will be drafted by the President’s senior staff Student leaders also working directly with plan authors to provide input

Planning Process (cont.) Strategic Directions Committee will review draft plan and make a recommendation to President Ross President Ross will make any changes and take the final proposal to the Board of Governors Board of Governors will consider the proposal and adopt a final plan

“Our Time, Our Future” Five discussion points proposed by President Ross to drive the strategic planning process 1.Degree Attainment 2.Academic Quality 3.Service to North Carolina 4.Maximizing Efficiency 5.Accessibility and Affordability

1. Degree Attainment Set goal for the optimal percentage of North Carolinians with a college degree Two directions for goal-setting: ▫Aspirations (goal based on other states or international competitiveness, about 40%) ▫Economic need (goal based on estimated need of North Carolina’s workforce, about 32%) What is best for the University and the State?

2. Academic Quality How can the University... ▫Strengthen admission and progress standards? ▫Focus on workforce skills? ▫Improve academic advising? ▫Enhance use of technology in the classroom? What other issues need to be considered?

3. Service to North Carolina How can the University... ▫Make NC more globally competitive? ▫Expand research, especially to align with the State’s priorities? ▫Meet needs for the State’s K-12 teachers? ▫Strengthen NC’s creative economy? What other issues need to be considered?

4. Maximizing Efficiency How can the University... ▫Develop cost-effective tools for collaboration? ▫Encourage shared services to reduce cost? ▫Use facilities more efficiently? We should consider... ▫Defining “unnecessary” duplication of academic programs across campuses ▫Effects of performance-based funding What other issues need to be considered?

5. Accessibility and Affordability How will the University... ▫Embrace the NC Constitution’s mandate to keep tuition and fees low? ▫Identify appropriate, viable, and sustainable sources of financial aid? What other issues need to be considered?
