Mario Yaldo Fight Club Major Differences

 In the book: The narrator meets Tyler Durden on a beach where Tyler is making a hand out of wood. (page 32)  In the movie: The narrator meets Tyler on a flight back home. Tyler gives the narrator his business card as a soap salesman.

 I feel the director of the movie decided that to randomly meet Tyler on the beach would be much more confusing for the viewer, rather than to meet him on an airplane, as the narrator is often flying.

In order to create soap you must use fat. Tyler teaches this to the narrator but they obtain it in two different ways.  In the book: Marla’s mother sends the fat from her liposuction for Tyler to use for soap.  In the movie: The narrator and Tyler rob a plastic surgeon’s office and fill up large bags of human fat.

 Director David Fincher probably changed this because its more practical and would make more sense if the protagonist stole it rather then getting it mailed to them.  Why would a mother save her fat anyway?

The narrator tries to commit suicide in both platforms, just in different ways.  In the book: The narrator is surrounded by his support group and Marla.  In the movie: The narrator is tied to a chair and on top of a building that is about to explode. Marla comes right after he shoots, he survives.

 I feel that in the context of the plot, the movie version made a little more sense.  He is physically and mentally getting rid of Tyler Durden.

 In the book: The narrator ends up in a mental institution and the members of project mayhem tell him they are still fulfilling his duties.  In the movie: The movie ends before the narrator sees the outcome of everything. The movie ends with buildings crashing down and a giant penis.

 I feel the director wanted to leave the ending of the movie to imagination of the viewer. He wanted us to decide the future of the narrator.  Where could you go from here? The narrator is tied to a chair with a hole in his mouth next to his new love Marla.
