Overview on the Work of WG 6 Reference Version and Implementation WG Coordinator: Ulrich Schättler

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy2 The Work Packages 6.1: Operational implementations 6.2: Running the web site 6.3: Documentations, Newsletter, Technical Reports 6.4: Operational coding of the interpolation program INT2LM 6.5: Operational coding of the nesting Version 6.6: Grib related issues 6.7: Proposal for a set-up of a file-based data assimilation system 6.8: Towards ISO 9000

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy3 6.1: Operational Implementations Updates of programs and documentations Code optimization and portability –Discussions during WG 6 workshop in Zürich (April) –Need of optimization of asynchronous IO (DWD, others?) Update Procedure / Verification of Reference Version –see WG 5 for Common Verification Package –will now use this package for verification of Reference Version LM 3.1 –One of the next LM releases should be next Reference Version Software Engineering Guidelines

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy4 LM: Plans from 2003 Adaptations for new multi-layer soil model (  ) Update of Kain-Fritsch convection scheme - Restructuring of TKE-scheme (  ) 3D Turbulence (  ) Prognostic precipitation also for 3-timelevel  Further development of 2-timelevel scheme  Optimizations for the NEC  Possibility of using additional GRIB tables (  ) Developments for CLM -

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy5 LM: Changes in the last year LM Version 3.6: –Changes to the new multí-layer soil model –New option to assimilate single SATOB winds –Optimizations for vector computers; Bug corrections LM Version 3.7: –Prognostic precipitation for Leapfrog scheme –Additional options for Runge-Kutta scheme –Synthetic satellite images for Meteosat, MSG –Adaptations in the TKE scheme –Choice of precipitation scheme ( itype_gscp )

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy6 LM: Changes in the last year LM Version 3.11: –First ifdef introduced in the main program lmorg.f90 Newest Version since last week: 3.12 –Preparations for assimilation of 1dVar satellite retrievals –New option for revised quality control for humidity –Initialization of fields for prognostic precipitation –Bug corrections

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy7 LM: Future Plans Operational use of multi-layer soil model Introduction of Graupel-scheme Implementation of 3D turbulence Shallow convection scheme Update of Kain-Fritsch convection scheme Developments for CLM Bug corrections, optimizations,...

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy8 6.2: Running the Web Site Maintaining, updating (and mirroring) the Web Site –Greek server is down since March; Updates can only be done in Manno –A solution has to be found for that!!! –Many pages are rather old => need Contents Management Software tools for exchange within COSMO –Several tools are available: field_extra, MakeAOF, grIns –On the private pages of the Web: Software/Utilities

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy9 Documentations on the Web Operational Applications (Updated!) Research Applications (still nothing available) –Possible: LMK, LM_Z Planned Extensions: –Update histories of the programs –History of operational versions –Description of the Working Groups This all has to be updated regularly!!!

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy10 6.3: Restructuring of Documentation Numerics and Dynamics Physical Parameterizations draft available Data Assimilation Implementation Documentation Preprocessing: draft with NAMELIST description for INT2LM available User Guide (but not web based) draft available Quick Reference Guide: first draft available since Monday

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy11 6.4: Operational coding of INT2LM Every now and then a miracle occurs Full INT2LM as test version available (int2lm_test_1.1: including GME2LM, IFS2LM, LM2LM) After testing phase it will be put to Version Control System and become operational software It will replace GME2LM

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy12 6.5: Oper. coding of Nesting Version The work packages of the last period could be fulfilled. –Install sequential version of the LM nesting scheme –Implementation of the nesting scheme to the latest LM version (3.9) Problems solved thereby: –Treatment of external parameters for the nest –Reproducibility for one-way nesting Remaining problems –Reproducibility for feedback-options –relaxation of boundary and external data into the nests Discussions about the future of this version are necessary

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy13 6.6: Grib related issues Work is going on in Zürich –Definition of a COSMO table of generating processes –Clean implementation of Grib Code –Definition of an external Grib table How to bring this work to official code?

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy : The Rest Proposal for a set-up of a file-based data-assimilation suite –still has to be written –but see cooperation Zürich - Athens Towards ISO 9000 –DWD and MeteoSwiss are about to be ISO certified (October / November) –Dieter Frühwald will inform the SSC

th General COSMO Meeting --- Milano, Italy15 Schedule Davide Cesari, ARPA-SIM Running LM on a Linux Cluster Lucio Torrisi, UGM A new option for Rayleigh Damping using frames Jan-Peter Schulz, DWD Future Plans of DWD: GME and LME
