alfred stieglitz. alfred was born in 1864 and died in therefore he witnessed america “transform.” he saw new york city transform from a sleepy town to a modern metropolis. stieglitz did mainly portraits and landscapes while in new york. but he did not live his entire life in new york. he was born in new jersey and went to germany to pursue a engineering study. while in germany he abandoned his engineering study to pursue a photographic career. his view of photography was very modern. steiglitz focused on moving photography from romanticism to a “modernest american view.” some of stieglitz’s accomplishments were founding a camera club in 1902 and a year later starting a journal called camera’s works. also he was the first successful photographer to photograph in rain, in snow, and at night in but to me, his best accomplishment was making the world realize that photography was its own art form

paul strand. strand was born in new york city in 1890, and lived until he became acquainted with alfred stieglitz while in new york also. strand first started taking pictorial photographs, but then changed to “straight photography” in straight photography is when you use the intrinsie capabilities of large format cameras to take pictures. in the 1920s strand left the photography business and became interested in cinematography. around the 1930s he became interested in photography again and in 1934 he founded “frontier films,” a documentary film company. but as his life comes to an end, he spends the last twenty some years in europe and africa taking photographs. as you can tell, strand’s subjects have changed throughout his life. it went from the modern metropolis of new york city’s energy and movement to focused expressions of objective reality. strand was able to demonstrate the effectiveness of art promoting social change in his lifetime. what do you think you can do with yours?

imogen cunningham. cunningham was born in 1883 and began an interest in photography in but while in college in 1909 she won a scholarship to study photography in germany. upon her return to america in 1910, she opened a studio in seattle. in 1934 cunningham joined ansel adams and william van dyke in the group f/64. upon one of her discussions with a fellow f/64 member she stated that she felt her love for taking botanical pictures were forgotten, she was now a portrait photographer. around 1940 she began teaching at california school of fine arts. cunningham continued taking pictures until just weeks before her death in she died at the age of 93. cunningham took portraits, pictorial, and botanical photographs. she was known as the quintessential american woman photographer

annie leibovitz annie leibovitz was born in 1949, and is still living. leibovitz discovered her love for photography around 1967 while she was enrolled in san francisco art institute. after graduating, she applied at rolling stone magazine and received the job. within two years, she was chief photographer. she was rs first woman chief photographer. and, she held the position for ten years, before leaving rs in 1983 to work for vanity fair. a major accomplishment in her life was becoming the official photographer in 1996 for the summer olympics in atlanta, georgia. leibovitz has gone through life and made her mark in life. her trademark is her bold primary colors and her suprising poses. lastly, she is still in demand as a portrait photographer. she’s photographed queen elizabeth ii, whoopi goldberg, and many other celebrities.

ansel adams. ansel adams was a man characterized as “a photographer who photographs and idealized wilderness that no longer exists.” adams was a photographer as well as an environmentalist, and a concert pianist. what helped make adams’ success early on was the sierra club. in 1919 they were the first to publish his work. he was a photographer of landscapes and nature. but something interesting was that he never made a creative photo specifically for environmental reasons. another input to his success was albert bender, who helped put adams’ first portfolio together. also, two more people who was mentioned earlier in the slideshow were an impact on his life and photography. paul strand and alfred steiglitz. strand introduced him to straight photography and he admired steiglitz the most out of all photographers. ansel adams was known as the last and defining photographer in the romantic tradition of the nineteenth century american landscape painting and photography. adams may have been super bad at school, and struggled almost all his life with financial difficulties, but he made a large impact on many lives an still does
