Did you remember that you don't always have to start at 1 to count? Let’s count to 50 again but we will start with a number other than 1.
Let’s start with the number 25. What number comes after the number 25?
Let’s find 25 on the number chart. What comes after 25?
That is right! 26
Let’s begin- 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30….
How many cats do I have?
That is right. I have 12 cats.
Now you make 12 of something on your paper. I used cats. What can you make 12 of on your paper?
Good Job!!
Lesson
In our last lesson we added groups of objects. When we added the objects together we made more objects.
We use the addition symbol to let us know we were adding the objects.
Sometimes words can let us know we are adding.
Let’s try a word problem. John has 2 dogs. Bob has 1 dog. How many dogs do they have altogether ?
First we can draw 2 dogs for John and 1 dog for Bob. Then we count all the dogs together to find our answer
There are 3 dogs altogether = 1 3
Tom ate 3 slices of pizza. His friend Jerry ate 4 slices of pizza. How many slices did the boys eat altogether ? TomJerry
If we count all the pizza slices Tom and Jerry had we can find the total number of pizza slices the boys ate. TomJerry
The boys ate 7 pizza slices altogether. TomJerry =7
At the restaurant we ordered 4 glasses of milk. After a while we ordered 2 more glasses of milk. How many glasses of milk did we order in all ?
If we count all the glasses of milk we ordered we can find the total number of glasses of milk we ordered in all
There are 6 glasses of milk in all =6
We have 3 pencils. We buy 1 more pencil. How many pencils do we have now?
If we count all the pencils we bought we can find the total number of pencils we ordered in all
There are 4 pencils in all = 4
Practice!
Let’s work these problems on the document camera.
Let’s practice some more word problems. Have 10 counters to use to help you. You can use beans, coins, blocks or rocks as a counter. n/addition-word-problems-sums-up-to- 10
Good job today! In our next lesson we will learn different types of addition equations.
Goodbye! See you next time!
