Main Idea/Vocabulary I will find and estimate the areas of figures by counting squares. area
Example 1 Estimate Areas Find the area of the figure at the right. Step 1 Count the number of whole squares in the figure. 7 whole squares = 7 square units Step 2 Count the number of half squares in the figure.
Example 1 Estimate Areas Step 3 Add the number of whole and half squares. Answer:
1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 1 A.22 square feet B.24 square feet C.26 square feet D.30 square feet Find the area of the figure.
Example 2 Estimate Areas The diagram to the right shows the floor plan for a shed. One square on the grid represents 1 square foot. About how many square feet is the area of the shed floor? Step 1 Count the number of whole squares in the diagram. 37 whole squares = 37 square feet
Example 2 Estimate Areas Step 2 Count the number of partial squares in the diagram. 4 partial squares is about 2 square feet Step 3 Add the number of whole and partial squares = 39 square feet Answer: The area of the shed is about 39 square feet.
1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.about 10 square feet B.about 13 square feet C.about 15 square feet D.about 20 square feet One square on the grid represents 1 square foot. About how many square feet is the area of the figure?
Example 3 Estimate Areas A lake is shown to the right. Each square represents 1 square mile. Estimate the area of the lake. Step 1 Count the number of whole squares. There are 13 whole square which is 13 square miles.
Example 3 Estimate Areas Step 2 Count the number of partial squares. 20 partial squares is about 10 square miles. Step 3 Add the number of whole and partial squares is about 23 square miles. Answer: The area of the lake is about 23 square miles.
1.A 2.B 3.C 4.D Example 2 A.about 17 square miles B.about 21 square miles C.about 30 square miles D.about 36 square miles Each square represents 1 square mile. Estimate the area of the shape below.
