Current ERM Activities at the University of California Bev French, Director, Shared Content, CDL Wendy Parfrey, Shared Content Analyst, CDL ICOLC Meeting, March 2004

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March,  Many, many licenses and resources require…  Many, many FTEs managing e-resources in…  Many, many different ERM-related tools. Leading to…  Many, many complaints by staff about inefficiency, ineffectiveness, and increased workload, as well as…  Many, many unformed (but different!) ideas about possible solutions. Background on ERM at UC/CDL

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March,  2003 Elsevier renewal drives CDL to investigate systems for collaborative decision-making at title level  “Me too” pile-on by campuses to avoid current pain and avoid incompatibility and further pain  The systemwide operations and planning group moves at lightning speed to further conversation among all stakeholders about ERMs, UC-wide and campus needs: March planning meeting of ~50 Recent ERM planning activities at UC

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March,  Collection development decision-making  Ongoing management and tracking of e-resource packages, including workflow support  End-user discovery and access (A to Z)  Educate faculty about particular titles (impact factor, price, UC editors, open access alternatives, etc.)  Provide full life cycle functionality for shared digital, digital preservation, and shared print journals  Need ability to batch overlay (or virtually join) records across multiple silos (identifiers, descriptive standards, single vs. separate records, etc.) ERM-related efforts at the CDL

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March,  Data management problem (rather than money, insufficient skills, poor communication problem, etc.)  Multiplicity of existing tools and data structures, especially different ILS systems  Lack accurate, up-to date, comprehensive, consistent data  Lack integrated views of ERM-related information  Focus on fundamental data management: tracking URL changes, vendor changes, coverage changes, etc.  Desire for better support for collection development decision-making Common themes from pre-meeting survey

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March,  Joy  Enlightenment  World peace Outcomes from last week’s planning meeting

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March, Endorse and promote standards efforts  DLF ERMI: Tim Jewell et al, including two librarians from UCLA, Sharon Farb and Angela Riggio  NISO/EDItEUR Joint Working Party  Serial Products and Subscriptions (SPS)  Serial Online Holdings (SOH)  COUNTER: Counting Online Usage of NeTworked Electronic Resources  ISO International Standard Text Code (ISTC) Ideas on next steps re: consortial ERM (1)

Current ERM Activities at the University of California ICOLC Meeting, New Orleans, March, Pressure vendors to make librarians’ lives easier  Publishers, interface providers, “PAMS” such as Serials Solutions should give libraries:  accurate data, in standards-compliant format, early and often  ILS and ERMs tools should load these data easily  Ensure that commercial products in the ERM category support consortial needs  seamlessly integrate shared records w/ local  seamlessly integrate with other vendors’ systems  Ensure e-resource vendors provide usage statistics that are compliant with Project COUNTER Ideas on next steps re: consortial ERM (2)
