Types of Narrator

Narrator – In fiction, the one who tells the story. Narrators differ in their degree of participation in the story.

Types of Narrator First-Person Narrator – The narrator is a witness to or participant in the story they tell. They will use the pronoun “I,” “We,” “Us,” etc.

Types of Narrator Third-Person Narrator – A narrator who is outside of the action of the story. They will use pronouns “He,” “She,” “They,” etc.

Types of Narrator Third-Person Omniscient Narrator – A narrator who is outside of the action of the story, and... Omniscient means they are “all knowing” and they can take us into the minds and hearts of all the characters and behind all the events unfolding in the story.

Types of Narrator Third-Person Limited Narrator – A third-person narrator who zooms in on the thoughts and feelings of one character, allowing the reader to experience the action through that character’s perception.

Types of Narrator Unreliable Narrator – A first-person narrator whose account of a story cannot be trusted. This narrator lacks a factual and complete understanding of the story they are telling because of personal closeness to the story, mental disorder, age and forgotten memories, etc. We must question what they tell us.
