WEEK 28  3/30/15 *Catalyst:* What does the word “ethical” mean? ***NEW PROCEDURE:*** You have 1 song to do the following: 1) Complete the catalyst ! 2) Get out any talking out you need to! 3) Find your seat!

Learning Intention: We will demonstrate knowledge of the complexity of biological issues in today’s society. Learning Intention: We will demonstrate knowledge of the complexity of biological issues in today’s society. Success Criteria: We will be successful when we can take a stance on a bioethical issue and can defend this stance using evidence. + AGENDA! Upcoming dates Introduction to bioethics Case study & argument

Upcoming dates Tomorrow (Tuesday) Class starts here and then moves to 307! Wednesday & Thursday In computer lab 307. Thursday by end of class = Bioethics research project due!!!

“BIOETHICS is the study of the typically controversial ethical issues emerging from new situations & possibilities brought about by advances in biology & medicine.” ***Basically because we can manipulate DNA…

Manipulating DNA How can we manipulate DNA? –Literally cut it into pieces. –Done through proteins called restriction enzymes What can it be used for? –Paternity testing –Criminal Investigation –Genetic Engineering –Cloning

Paternity and Criminal Investigations Cut up fragments of DNA are put into a gel electrophoresis. Depending on how big the segment of DNA, the further down the gel a fragment of DNA will move. Then compare one persons DNA to another persons to see if they’re related.

Agree or disagree… that is the question! Thumbs up = I agree Thumbs down = I disagree Expectations: Wait until count down is over! 100% participation You must choose a side!!!

Practice Example. Agree OR Disagree? I wish that we could come to school during spring break.

***I believe that a paternity test should be required before a man has to make child support payments.

People can anonymously donate a sperm or an egg. *** Children who are born from these donations have the right to a paternity test to determine the identity of their genetic parents.

Man charged even after science defends him?! child-support-for-son-who-isnt-his/490355/ child-support-for-son-who-isnt-his/490355/

***I believe that, when available, DNA should always be used as evidence in a criminal investigation.

***Police should take a sample of every human’s fingerprints and DNA at birth to have on record.

Wrongly Convicted? The Innocence Project (329 exonerated by DNA) s-false-imprisonment/front- page#c10=published&b_start=0&c4=E xonerated+by+DNA s-false-imprisonment/front- page#c10=published&b_start=0&c4=E xonerated+by+DNA

Genetic Engineering Cut up fragments of DNA with specific genes can be added to DNA of a fertilized egg. This can give rise to organisms with new traits. Examples: (GMOs) Mice that can glow Many crops (tomatoes, corn, rice…)

***I believe that food that has been genetically modified should be labeled so that people can choose to not eat GMOs if they don’t want to.

I believe that we should genetically engineer fish to make them glow so we can sell them as cool pets.

Glofish.

Cloning Theoretically, any organism can be cloned to make a genetically identical organism. These two cats are clones but, they look different. This is because different genes on the same DNA can be activated by the different environments the organism grew up in.

I believe that we should make clones of human embryos (or fetuses) just to use their cells for scientific research.

I would want to be cloned!!!

Dolly the Sheep (1996) She was the first mammal to be cloned from an adult cell. tal+Archives/Science+and+Tec hnology/Biotechnology/ID/ / tal+Archives/Science+and+Tec hnology/Biotechnology/ID/ /

Where do you stand? Today: Put yourself in the shoes of someone facing a bioethical dilemma. Take a stance and defend it using evidence. Tomorrow: Begin a project researching a bioethical dilemma of your choice.

Reading EXPECTATIONS! Quiet with neighbors. C3-B4-ME (Then raise hand & wait!) Reading and argument formation! Sitting in a seat. Actively reading & answering!

SUCCESS CRITERIA What bioethical issue do you want to do your research paper on? 3/30/15
