Empathy Definition The action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing feelings, thoughts, opinions, and/or experience of another person.

What Empathy Looks Like… Experiencing feelings and emotions that match those of another person Sharing in the same experiences or going through similar situations Feeling a concern for other people that creates a desire to want to help them Supportive and caring, regardless of your opinions or beliefs

Empathy in Relationships Encourages open and honest communication without the fear of being judged or ridiculed Allows people to truly and deeply understand one another and their feelings/emotions Encourages a person to be who they really are Helps prevent emotional problems Helps to develop a sense of trust and honesty in the relationship

4 Steps to Empathy 1.Listen Intently. 2.Identify the other person’s feeling(s). 3.Accept their feeling(s). 4.Verbalize their feeling(s).

Empathetic Statements Acknowledge/restate the other person’s feelings and why they are feeling that way. Offer supportive help or guidance. (this is not the same as giving advice or “fixing the problem”) Reassure the person that they can do something or overcome an obstacle that they are facing.

Empathetic Situations and Your Response Get in groups of 2 or 3 Read over the situations and come up with empathetic responses for each of them. Make sure you include the 3 main parts of empathetic statements for each response. All group members need to be involved in the statement making process. This will be taken for a quiz grade.
