~Lakes~ By: Kristen Hillman, Nicole Daroza, and Travis Rodrigues.
Lake Michigan Eco-system within our biosphere. Example of population: Fish The fish share Lake Michigan with other organisms. Predation occurs.
*~Predation~* Fish eat zooplankton and other smaller fish. Fish provide food for humans.
WEATHER/CLIMATE Many organisms that live in a lake or near a lake have to migrate during the seasons because of the variable weather. During summer many plants grow around the lake because the water is warm During winter the lake freezes over and the snow covers the ground killing the plants.
Competition There is 3 types of competition in Lakes. The first is when organisms of different species fight for the same kind of resource. Second, when algae and organisms fight for a limited amount of oxygen in a lake. Another kind is when organisms of the same species fight for land in the same territory.
*)PoPuLaTiOn(* Predator and prey relationship is a way to keep the population in the lake down. By feeding on other organisms, it helps the lake to not reach its carrying capacity that could do much damage and never stabilize again.By feeding on other organisms, it helps the lake to not reach its carrying capacity that could do much damage and never stabilize again.
~COOPERATION~ Without cooperation there would be destruction in all aquatic areas. Like competition, there are three kinds of cooperation.Like competition, there are three kinds of cooperation. First, mutualism, which is where both species benefit from their relationship. A second kind is commensalism. This is where one organism benefits, and the other is left unharmed. The last kind of cooperation is called parasitism.
Why Lakes are COOL Lakes have only done positive things for humans. Beginning from the early 1600's the Great Lakes have been in serious need. The waterways are major highways of trade and fish is a major resource. They have always had fertile land, producing many crops such as fruit, vegetables, and tobacco. They have always had fertile land, producing many crops such as fruit, vegetables, and tobacco.
Why Lakes are COOL (continued) They have always had fertile land, producing many crops such as fruit, vegetables, and tobacco. Transportation was a big deal. Iron, coal, and grain are the 3 major products that are shipped on the Great Lakes. Since fish is such a major resource consumed from the Great lakes, commercial fishing is popular.Since fish is such a major resource consumed from the Great lakes, commercial fishing is popular. It may not be as popular as it used to be because of pollution, but trading fish is and always will be important.
The Lake in Michigan With so many lakes, and Lake Michigan being a huge helping hand to several countries, they all can’t remain healthy throughout life. People have a huge part in helping the lakes stay healthy.
SAVE THE LAKES While people are benefiting from the lakes, they aren’t paying attention to the stability of them. Lake Michigan has had many problems, including the land being underdeveloped.
=(PrObLeMs)= Much of the lake’s shore is private property and being built on, causing the banks to collapse and the water to flood. Climate change is also a problem.
MORE problems With the climate changing, it has caused lower lake levels, causing erosion and causing problems for wetlands and navigation. Acid rain is another threat.Acid rain is another threat.
AIR PoLLution With sedimentary limestone lying on the bottom of Lake Michigan, it helps with acid rain created by the burning of fossil fuels, and producing electrical power. Air pollution may not seem like it could affect a lake, but it does.
FOOD CHAIN Through many steps, toxic contaminants are deposited into the lakes, and becoming available to people, through the food chain.
Endangered Species All of these problems are what cause endangered species. All of these problems are what cause endangered species. Purple Lilliput, also known as a mussel, is a very small organism that has been slowly disappearing in Lake Michigan.
Endangered Species (continued) Also, a duck called Blue Bill Drake has been eating zebra mussels and being poisoned from the bacteria and toxins in the water. Some species that have already been extinct are known as Black Fin Cisco, and Long jaw Cisco that are types of fish.
Downfalls Although Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes have showed signs of healthier ecosystems, the future holds many signs of unhealthiness.Although Lake Michigan and the other Great Lakes have showed signs of healthier ecosystems, the future holds many signs of unhealthiness. As our economy and technology advances more signs of toxins and pollutants will arise.
In the Future... Rather than thinking about the lakes and the organisms that have those places as their homes, more buildings and factories will be built over them. To help save a lake or continue its life in the future, you have to be able to understand how sensitive it is.To help save a lake or continue its life in the future, you have to be able to understand how sensitive it is.
