Drawing to Scale

What does it mean to say something is “to scale”?

“To scale” means an object is represented proportionally.proportionally Examples???

Example: Map An important property of a map is the scale The scale is sometimes indicated with a ratio –Example: 1:1,000 cm (1 cm on the map represents 1,000 meters on the ground) The map reader can measure the distance on the map and determine the distance on the ground –Example 5 cm on the map is 5x1,000 cm on the gound, or 5,000cm (How many meters is this?)

Scale Factor A scale factor helps us ‘size’ things down (or up) so to speak The scale factor tells how many times larger or smaller the representation is –Example: doubling something gives a scale factor of 2

Example The scale factor for Hot Wheels® Monster Jam® cars is 1:24. What does that mean?

Scale Factor The scale factor is the number by which each dimension of the original object is multiplied to find the corresponding dimension of the model.

How do you draw something to scale? Decide on appropriate units Choose a scale factor Measure your original object Multiply the dimensions by the scale factor Recreate the object with the new dimensions
