Write On!

 Learn about the elements of a map: directional indicators, compass rose, scale, and inset maps.

 Shows which directions are north, south, east, and west.

 A compass is a tool that helps the user know what direction one is headed.  On a map, a compass or a compass rose helps the user locate these directions.

 Maps are made to scale; that is, there is a direct connection between a unit of measurement on the map and the actual distance.

Scale

 Could show areas that are far away from areas shown on the main map ex. Maps of the United States often include inset maps of Alaska and Hawaii  Could show areas on a map enlarged  Inset maps might be drawn to a different scale than the main map.

 Construct a picture than draw another one that is not to scale. Explain why it is not to scale and the importance of maps being to scale. Or  Construct a map that includes an inset map. Explain why the inset map is included and its importance.
