Bearings N E S W NE SE SW NW These are the cardinal points of a compass

Bearings Bearings (angles) are used to describe the direction you must travel to get from one place to another. The bearing is measured from the North line in a clockwise direction and has values from 0º to 360º. The bearing (angle) is given as a THREE FIGURE number using zeros in front if necessary.

Bearings North X Y a b To find a bearing:  Bearing of Y from X Measure angle a  Bearing of X from Y Measure angle b You also usually need to include distance for navigational purposes. In scale drawings these distances must be drawn to scale. Note the similarity to parallel lines!!!!

Measuring a Bearing Find the bearing of Gt Yarmouth from Norwich Norwich Gt Yarmouth Place the protractor with the cross on Norwich and the 0 o on the North line Draw a North line straight up the page at Norwich Join Norwich and Gt Yarmouth Read off the angle between the North line and the line joining Norwich and Gt Yarmouth 110 o

Measuring a Bearing Find the bearing of Norwich from Gt Yarmouth Norwich Gt Yarmouth Place the protractor with the cross on Norwich and the 0 o on the North line Draw a North line straight up the page at Gt Yarmouth Join Norwich and Gt Yarmouth Read off the angle between the North line and the line joining Norwich and Gt Yarmouth 70 o To measure a bearing you must go CLOCKWISE, so subtract 70 o from 360 o as the angles at a point add upto 360 o. Bearing = 290 o

070 o 090 o 155 o 360 o –120 o = 240 o 360 o – 26 o = 334 o N Plymouth. Bodmin. Bude

070 o 090 o 155 o 360 o –120 o = 240 o 360 o – 26 o = 334 o N Plymouth 360 – 108 = 252 o 043 o

Finding a back bearing without a protractor The bearing of Yarmouth from Beccles is 030 o. Find the bearing of Beccles from Yarmouth 30 Beccles Yarmouth To find the bearing of Beccles from Yarmouth you need to find this angle The bearing of Yarmouth from Beccles is 030 o

30 Beccles Yarmouth Use the properties of Allied or C angles – C angles add up to 180 o 150 o Now find the required angle using angles around a point add up to o So the bearing of Beccles from Yarmouth is 210 o

Finding a back bearing without a protractor The bearing of Norwich from Beccles is 280 o. Find the bearing of Beccles from Norwich 280 Norwich Beccles To find the bearing of Beccles from Norwich you need to find this angle The bearing of Norwich from Beccles is 280 o

280 Norwich Beccles Use the properties of angles around a point add up to 360 o 80 0 Now use the properties of Allied or C angles C angles add up to 180 o So the bearing of Beccles from Norwich is 100 o

There is one more thing you need to understand about bearings. That is that distances are sometimes used and written as a scale. For example a scale of 5 km to 1 cm, means that on a map or drawing, every 1 cm is 5 km in the actual ground.
