How to Read a Text Book Information and Strategies to Help Students with Reading Complex Text and Reading Comprehension

Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan For Secondary and Postsecondary Education Students

Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan ASCA:The Transformed School Counselor is an integral part of the total educational program of the school and students. Counselors are responsible for the academic success of all students and not just personal, interpersonal, social, and crisis management. Standard 2: The PSC implements the school guidance curriculum through the use of effective instructional skills and careful planning of structured group sessions for all students. (ASCA National Model pp. 63).

Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan Education Trust: All students need high quality education and skills in order to be successful in post-secondary education. School Counselors are in a unique position to reach all students and provide it for them.

Competencies Students will acquire the necessary skills to needed to read, comprehend, and retain material in text books.

Learning Objectives Students will learn how to preview a textbook Students will learn how to actively read their textbook Students will learn strategies on how to recall what they ’ ve read. Source: University of Texas at Austin Learning Center

Material P-R-R: How to Read a Textbook More Efficiently hand-out. A People ’ s History of the United States 1492 – Present by Howard Zinn.

Activities Students will be introduced to the steps/process of how to effectively read a textbook. After material have been presented, students will have a chance to ask questions or raise any concerns.

Activities Students will practice what they ’ ve learned using the Howard Zinn book. They will be specifically asked to read the first two pages of the chapter entitled “ Slavery without Submission, Emancipation without Submission ” and record all the questions and answers they have for each: P-R-R.

Assessment and Follow-Up Perception Students hand in to Counselor their worksheets. Counselor will network with all teachers across disciplines to incorporate and ensure that students use this type of method in their everyday reading.

Assessment and Follow-Up Data Counselor will gather scores from ELA Regents, and SATs to see if they have gone up compared to prior years.
