GRNET: owned fiber in South East Europe ready for e2e lamda services (via GEANT2) Chrysostomos Tziouvaras MSc. GRNET Broadband Infrastructures Development Manager Internet2 Member Meeting, April 23-25, 2007

Contents Introduction (Migrating from GRNET2 to GRNET3) Owned Fiber network WAN/MAN DWDM Optical design IP aggregation architecture Switched circuit service Major networking projects in SE Europe SEEREN2 SEELight

Migrating from GRNET2 to GRNET3 The GRNET network at its current state (GRNET2) is built on leased DWDM lambdas for interconnecting IP routers The next generation GRNET network (GRNET3) will be a hybrid network built on owned (long term IRUs) DF links

GRNET3 Fiber Network

Local connectivity Enable GRNET clients’ access to the WAN DF cloud through Municipal Fiber Networks (MFNs) that are currently built in most Greek cities expected to be available city by city in 2008

Global connectivity Planned DF access to GEANT2 by the end of 2007

GRNET3 fibers: terms of leasing Single-mode fiber pair 15-year IRUs Availability ≥ 99% Monitoring and failure reporting Failure recovery 3 days for repairing terrestrial links 20 days for repairing submarine links Maintenance: downtime cannot exceed 6 hours/year/link SLA for the optical characteristics of the DF links (attenuation, CD, PMD) Collocation services at terminal and intermediate sites

WAN optical design DWDM network ready for up to 21x10G lambdas without future addition of EDFAs/DCMs The network is ready to implement the maximum number of lambdas by just adding transponders At day 1 a limited number of lambdas will be deployed BER less than Minimization of terminal nodes so as to ensure cost effective scalability R-OADM ready: add/drop nodes can be in service upgraded to ROADMs Adequate “margins” for safe operation

MAN optical design Each GRNET3 client is O-SNCP protected

GRNET3 IP aggregation architecture GRNET3 will continue to provide IP services by using the same principles followed up to now IP routers are installed at major Greek cities IP routers will be interconnected with 2,5G PoS framed lambdas implemented via GRNET’s DWDM equipment Clients will be aggregated to the local GRNET3 routers by using 1GbE framed lambdas implemented via GRNET’s MAN DWDM equipment Reuse of existing IP equipment (Cisco GSR 12416/10) This aggregation architecture is cost effective for GRNET3 clients with capacity requirements up to 1Gbps but not optimized for clients which are expected soon to require 10Gbps capacity Two classes of GRNET3 clients: A limited number of clients (hereafter called Power Clients – PC) whose traffic is expected to soon overcome the 1Gbps barrier The rest clients (hereafter called Regular Clients – RC) whose traffic is expected not to exceed the 1Gbps barrier for the next 3 years

PCs aggregation to GRNET3 This deviation to the aggregation architecture is driven by the high cost of 10G router interfaces

RCs aggregation to GRNET3

Switched circuit service I Guaranteed capacity (1Gbps) service among selected GRNET3 clients, e.g. Grid clusters p2p 1GbE client interfaces Implemented via NG-SDH switches interconnected with dedicated 10G WAN lambdas Service provisioning options: Manually through the NMS Dynamically through the GMPLS/G.ASON control plane NG-SDH switches will be installed to Greek cities that host at least one Grid node (Athens, Thessaloniki, Patras, Heraklio)

Switched circuit service II

Equipment implementing GRNET3 GRNET procured equipment for: WAN optical transmission MAN optical transmission (Athens and Thessaloniki MANs) 4 NG-SDH switches L2/3 switch for PC aggregation For the optical/SDH part contract was awarded to Alcatel- Lucent (products: 1626LM, 1696MS, 1678MCC) Network deployment until Oct 2007 For the IP part contract was awarded to Cisco (product: Catalyst 6500) GRNET2 L3 equipment to keep in operation (Cisco GSR 12416/12410)

Major networking projects in SE Europe - SEEREN2 SEEREN2 is an FP6 EC project coordinated by GRNET SEEREN2 aims at further ease the “digital divide” that still separates most of the southeast European countries from the rest of the continent Interconnects the NRENs of Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, FYROM, Serbia, Serbia and Montenegro with GEANT2 SEEREN2 network operations and management is performed by regional academic teams promoting international cooperation and forming a virtual Network Operations Center (NOC)

Major networking projects in SE Europe – SEELight I SEELight is a project funded by 80% by the Greek State and the rest 20% by the beneficiary countries (Bulgaria, FYROM, Serbia, Romania) - aiming at: materializing the South-East European Lambda Network Facility for the regional research, academic and education communities to enable the provision of end-to-end network services, to meet user demands, to serve as a testbed for development of new networks and services and to allow the SEE research and education community to participate in international networking activities establishing long term sustainability of NREN networks in South East Europe deploying a South-Eastern European Network Operation Centre (SEENOC). The SEENOC will ensure that network services and operation is unobtrusive, will amass the necessary level of competence and will foster development cooperation on all levels

Major networking projects in SE Europe – SEELight II Main cost categories of the project : the long-term leasing of fiber the maintenance of the fiber the DWDM equipment acquisition followed by: planning/design, technical assistance and supervision during implementation and network operation
