Get Going with Shortcuts and Hotkeys

Focusing Questions What are shortcuts or hotkeys? How do they help when using the computer?

Instruction

Framing The Session Using the mouse is a powerful way to use the computer. Using hotkeys is as well. Why use hotkeys? They can help increase the speed with which you do ordinary tasks on the computer.

Teaching How does each one work? Which hotkeys are the most useful? Which hotkeys work with applications and the OS? Which hotkeys work only with applications? Which hotkeys work only with the OS?

Guided Practice We will review what each hotkey does using the following website. Follow and repeat what I do.

Work Time

Activity 1 Getting Started Students will play the PowerPoint game without looking at their cheat sheets. Students will be given the opportunity to use the hotkeys in the game on their computers and practice using each of them.

Activity 2 Scavenger Hunt 1.Open a new document in Microsoft Word 2.Go to this website Copy the text of the poem 4.Paste the text into Microsoft Word 5.Save it your iSquad folder as Poem 1 6.Find and replace tape deck with iPod 7.Find an replace fax number with 8.Find and replace pager with PSP 9.Bold the first word of every line 10.Underline every other word 11.Italicize the words between the underlined words 12.If you make a mistake, undo it 13.If you undo something by mistake, redo it 14.Save it 15.Select all the text 16.Copy all the text 17.Create a new Microsoft Word document 18.Paste the text into the new document 19.Save it to you iSquad folder as Poem 2

Activity 3 Choose another poem from the website Follow the steps listed below 1.Open a new document in Microsoft Word 2.Go to this website Copy the text of the poem 4.Paste the text into Microsoft Word 5.Format the poem you choose as you like.

Share

Students will share the poem they chose and show the changes they made. Students will explain which hotkeys they used to change the text. Students will say which hotkey they feel is the most useful and why. Share
