Application software: Almost any activity you do uses an application. Writing in word is using an application software. System Software: System software is designed to operate the computer hardware. Also to provide a platform for running application software. Data Software: A term used to describe any software used to manage or create a database.

Hardware 1.The motherboard connects all parts together. It can be thought of as the back bone of the computer. 2.A Hard drive stores and retrieves digital information. 3.The processor chip is the “brain” of a computer. 4.A modem enables a computer to transmit data. 5.The power supply provides power for the computer. 6.A RAM memory allows for data to be accessed quickly. 7.The sound card helps carry the in put and out put of sound signal. 8.Video card generates a form of out put images to display. 9.The network card connects a computer to a network hence the name. 10.A monitor displays what’s going on with the computer.

Computer Timeline 1939: Hewlett-Packard or HP is Founded. David Packard and Bill Hewlett found Hewlett-Packard in a Palo Alto, California garage. Their first product was the HP 200A Audio Oscillato. 1941: Konrad Zuse finishes the Z3 computer, an early computer. He worked in complete isolation. 1948: Claude Shannon´s "The Mathematical Theory of Communication" shows engineers how to code data. He did this so engineers could check for accuracy after transmission between computers. 1950: Engineering Research Associates of Minneapolis built the ERA 1101, the first commercially produced computer. 1952: Grace Hopper completes the A-0 Compiler, a program that allows a computer user to use English-like words instead of numbers.

Timeline Continued 1958: Japan's NEC built the country's first electronic computer, the NEAC : Hewlett-Packard entered the general purpose computer business with its HP : Researchers at the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center designed the Alto, the first work station with a built-in mouse. 1976: Steve Wozniak designed the Apple I, a single-board computer. 1981: Adam Osborne invents the first portable computer, the Osborne I, which weighed 24 pounds and cost $1,795.

Bit= a single 0 or 1, Byte= 8 bits (any combination of 8 0's or 1's) Kilobyte (KB)= 1024 bytes Megabytes (MB)= 1024 KB Gigabyte (GB)= 1024 MB Terabyte (TB)= 1024 GB Petabyte (PB)= 1024 TB Exabyte (EB)= 1024 PB Zettabyte (ZB)= 1024 EB Yottabyte (YB)= 1024 ZB RAM: Random Access Memory

First PC ever The first PC was invited by John Lentz in the 1950s. He designed and made it in the attic of Watson lab at Columbia University. It was names 610 Auto point computer.

First Laptop William Moggridge designed the first lap top in 1979, it was used by NASA on the space shuttle program in the early 1980's.

Trojans, Viruses, Worms Trojans: a Trojan horse virus is an virus which is released when you open an attachment. Worms: Worms spread from computer to computer, but unlike a virus, it has the capability to travel without any human action. Virus: A computer virus attaches itself to a program or file allowing it to spread from one computer to another.

Future of Computers I think computers in the future will become more developed and become things we would have never imagined. I think they’ll be computers in watches and even built into cars.

The Titans in Computers Apple: Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne Dell: Michael Dell HP: Bill Hewlett and David Packard Toshiba: Hisashige Tanaka, Ichisuke Fujioka, Shoichi Miyoshi Microsoft: Bill Gates, Paul Allen
