The Sonnet Objectives: SWBATD … CONTENT: application of literary elements by explaining how literary elements such as IMAGERY connect to THEME. LITERACY: application of literary elements by reading and writing on the theme of 1 sonnet

The Sonnet – Vocabulary Using your ipads, define the following words on your vocabulary sheet. An example is below. WORD DEFINITION EXAMPLE Connotation An idea or feeling a word evokes; usually positive or negative. A stubborn person can be described as STRONG-WILLED (positive) or PIG-HEADED (negative)

The Sonnet – Pre-Reading Imagine a summer day. It is early summer with the perfect mix of temperature and weather. List all the details of that perfect day using all 5 of your senses. SIGHT TOUCH TASTE SMELL HEARING

The Sonnet – Pre-Reading Now, write a general statement about the overall FEELING created by this perfect day. Now, think of a person. How is this person and the summer day alike? How are they different? Share your statements with the class.

Sonnet 18 - Shakespeare In addition to tragedies and comedies, Shakespeare wrote many sonnets. The topics for most of his sonnets are love. It is common practice to refer to Shakespeare’s sonnets using roman numerals; therefore, sonnet 18 is written “Sonnet XVIII.”

Sonnet XVIII 5 minutes: Read the poem silently to yourself. 5 minutes: Listen to teacher read the poem. 5 minutes: Define any unknown vocabulary on your vocabulary sheet.

Sonnet XVIII - Theme Theme is the message of the text. A work’s universal view about human life or human nature. Fill in the blanks with the information. In ______ (poem’s title), ______ (author) ______ (reveals, illustrates, explores, shows, or other marker verbs) _____ (important idea of the theme) and how it _____ (what does it show us on a universal level?)

Sonnet XVIII – Graphing Graph Sonnet XVIII using the graphing worksheet. Each box represents 1 syllable in the sonnet. Label the rhyme scheme of each line in the final box.
