 A seat, esp. for one person, usually having four legs for  support and a rest for the back and often having rests  for the arms.  Something that serves as a chair or supports like a chair:  The two men clasped hands to make a chair for their  injured companion.  A seat of office or authority.  A position of an authority, as of a judge, professor, etc.  The person occupying a seat of office, esp. the chairperson of a meeting: The speaker addressed the chair.  (in an orchestra) the position of a player, assigned by rank; desk: first clarinet chair.

 For us the chair- is :  a piece of seating furniture of certain quality and simplicity an article of ordinary use.

 chairs have symbolized the life and times of a designers and consumers.  An item of historical context such as:  What was important at the time?  Who were they made for?  What material and style was used and why.

For designers to design a chair it involves:  engineering  material choice  production method  Choice of a style  Functionality All joined in one small package.

 The first mass produced Thonet No. 14 chair in the 1850s  B3 (Wassily) chair designed by Marcel Breuer Breuer found his inspiration for the chair in the bent form of a bicycle handlebar.  Jasper Morrison's Air Chair using gas injection Morrison also was a pioneer in using gas- injection technology for furniture
