2-4-2 TERMINAL OBJECTIVE Perform the necessary steps to correctly don the aircrew CBR ensemble.

2-4-3 ENABLING OBJECTIVE Understand the procedures for donning all Below-the-neck clothing Understand the procedures for donning the Respirator Assembly Understand the functional readiness tests for the Respirator Assembly

2-4-4INTRODUCTION n A/P22-14 (V)1 and A/P23P Chemical, Biological and Radiological (CBR) Respirator Assemblies are designed to protect rotary wing aircrew from the toxic and lethal effects of chemical, biological and nuclear agents n A/P22P-14 (V)2 - 4 CBR Respirator Assemblies are designed to protect fixed wing aircrew from the above listed agents from ground level to 43,000 ft. n Below-the-neck (BTN) components are designed to compliment and enhance the respirator assembly function.

2-4-5 INTRODUCTION NOTE Donning of Respirator Assembly and BTN clothing shall be supervised by a qualified Aircrew Survival Equipmentman, MOS 6060, in accordance with OPNAVINST Series. Donning of Respirator Assembly and BTN clothing shall be supervised by a qualified Aircrew Survival Equipmentman, MOS 6060, in accordance with OPNAVINST Series.

Donning Order – Rotary Wing cont. n Helmet n CBR gloves n CBR over booties - to be removed prior to entering aircraft n CBR cape - to be removed prior to entering aircraft

Donning Procedures n Spectacles (ARS) –can regular spectacles be used? n Skull cap –to help absorb sweat from the head –may require additional help to put hood on over

Donning Procedures cont n Mask –Hood outlet valve open –Ensure pusher fan is “ON” WARNING When donning the mask do not overextend or damage the neck seal. Do not wear watches or stone rings while donning. n Respirator Functional Test

Respirator Function Test n Don hood n Don helmet n Pusher fan on n Connect toggle harness assembly to helmet and adjust n Pinch-off hood inlet hose –Air vents through hood outlet valve n Wearer holds breath and notes if air is leaking from around the mask –Leakage evident readjust toggle harness. If still present and can’t fix via toggle harness replace with a smaller or larger mask.

Donning Procedures cont n Once mask and hood are donned tuck shoulder skirt into flight suit –this is why you must don mask prior to torso harness and/or survival vest CAUTION Ensure shoulder skirt material does not catch in the slide fastener and neck bellows remains outside of flight suit collar. Be sure shoulder skirt is not tucked in too tightly, as this can restrict mobility.

This. Not this

Donning Procedures cont l Helmet –Turn pusher fan “OFF” –Sprinkle talc on exposed hood covering the head * –Don fore to aft –Attach chin/nape strap –Turn pusher fan “ON” –Check visor operation * NOTE A very light dusting of talc on the outside of the hood can be used to facilitate helmet donning. Cont next page

Donning Procedures cont n Secure mask to helmet WARNING For proper retention of the helmet, the toggle harness must lie over hooks provided on V- bow. n Check nose occluder n Perform location drills

Donning Procedures cont n Intercom Unit (ICU) –Connect to mask mic and helmet –ICU Functional Test –Secure to vest WARNING Ensure ICU is turned off prior to removing or installing batteries. NOTE The amplifier must be removed for the ICU to operate properly.

ICU Functional Test n Connect to mask microphone with ground com cord n Switch toggle or control knob to Listen Only position. n Talk into ICU and have aircrew confirm sound in helmet. n Switch toggle or control knob to Talk/Listen position. n Instruct aircrew to talk and confirm sound from speaker. n Talk into ICU and have aircrew confirm sound in helmet earphones.

Ground Comms to Air Comms n Insure appropriate amp is connected to aircraft comms –All platforms n Disconnect ground comms prior to hooking up to aircraft comms –Unless not connected to aircraft comms

Donning Procedures cont n Canteen WARNING Keep the drink facility quick disconnect plugged into a canteen or its holder to reduce the chance of contamination NOTE Not authorized for in-flight use by aircrews of ejection seat aircraft.

Donning Procedures cont n Cotton Glove Inserts if using old glove system –Optional for new glove system –Roll up flight suit sleeves n Butyl Protective Gloves or Gore HSF Chemical Protective Gloves –Under CPU sleeves –Flight Gloves –Flight suit over gloves

n Disposable Footwear Covers –Protect from contamination en-route to aircraft. –Remove before entering aircraft n Cape Donning Procedures cont

NVG INTEGRATION NVG Donning Considerations –Set Eye Relief Adjustments to the forward position –Expect reduced dexterity & increased time required when adjusting goggles NVG Performance –Degraded FOV (additional 10%) –Based on helmet and mask size / fit. –Greatly increases potential for Loss of SA / SD –Some are unable to focus

MISSION READINESS n Conduct Pre-flight inspection n Disconnect canteen (for ejection seat aircraft) n Communication connection change (if aircraft comms available) n Remove cape and booties prior to entering aircraft n Oxygen connection and H-manifold in proper position if O2 is to be used n Check for proper field of view and head mobility ENSURE:

PRE-FLIGHT INSPECTION n Visual Inspection n Cleaning n Functional tests

DOFFING PROCEDURES UNCONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE WARNING Aircrewmembers must be checked with M-8/M-9 detection paper for contamination prior to assuming they are uncontaminated. Personnel wearing contaminated equipment shall report to the nearest decontamination station.

DOFFING PROCEDURES UNCONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE n Remove Cape and footwear covers. n Doff canteen (if worn). n Remove flight gloves, protective gloves and glove inserts. n Disconnect microphone lead from pigtail n Remove COM cord and ICU

DOFFING PROCEDURES UNCONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE n Rotate V-bow to “UP” position n Disconnect CBR adapter straps from helmet n Doff helmet n Remove respirator shoulder skirt from flight suit n Remove respirator shoulder skirt from flight suit CAUTION When doffing mask assembly do not overstretch and/or damage the neck seal n Doff mask VIDEO

DOFFING PROCEDURES UNCONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE Remove pusher fan and battery pocket from SV-2/AIRSAVE if used or doff overvest Remove pusher fan and battery pocket from SV-2/AIRSAVE if used or doff overvest n Doff SV-2, g-suit and torso harness n Doff skull cap and ARS n Remove flight boots

DOFFING PROCEDURES UNCONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE n Remove remainder of flight suit n Doff chemical liner and inspect n Remove cotton undergarments n Dispose of chemical socks

DOFFING PROCEDURES CONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE WARNING Do not handle suspected contaminated items unless wearing chemical protective equipment. Personnel wearing contaminated equipment shall report to the nearest decontamination station. Procedures as stated in CBR NATOPS manual will be conducted.

DOFFING PROCEDURES CONTAMINATED ENSEMBLE NOTE Refer to: n USN CBR NATOPS n Operational Instructions

Lessons Learned - Use Skull Cap under Hood - Have plenty of water available -Ensure Internal Drink Tube is set properly -Requires increased Aircrew Coordination - In both Donning and in Flight Ops

2-4-45Questions? n What is the first piece of NBC gear you should put on? The last? n What is the respirator functional test? n Can canteens be used while flying? n Name a couple of things you should ensure to be mission ready.
