The Elements of Art The Elements of Art are the visual building blocks that the artist puts together to create a work of art. All works of art will contain some or all of these elements.

Color Color is the visual sensation dependent on the reflection or absorption of light from a given surface. The three characteristics of color are hue, value, and intensity. Hue - The undiluted color in its purest intensity. Refers to the name of a color. Value - the lightness and darkness of the hue. Intensity - the brightness or dullness of a color. Intensity can be changed by adding black, white, gray, or an opposite color on the color wheel. Primary Colors- refers to the colors red, yellow, and blue. From these all other colors are created.

Value Value is the lightness or darkness of color. Artwork utilizes color to lend emphasis, contrast, or balance to the composition. Value can be shown through blending, cross- hatching, gradation, stippling and shading. Gradation StipplingCrosshatching

Shape A shape is a two- dimensional area that is defined in some way. All shapes can be classified as either geometric or free form. Geometric Shape are precise shapes that can be described using mathematical formulas. Free Form Shapes are irregular and uneven shapes.

Form Forms are objects having three dimensions. Like shapes they have both length and width, but forms also have depth. All forms can be classified as either geometric or free form. Geometric forms are precise shapes that can be described using mathematical formulas. Free Forms are irregular and uneven shapes.

Space The emptiness or area between, around, above, below, or contained within objects. Shapes and forms are defined by the space around and within them, just as spaces are defined by the shapes and forms around and within them. The Illusion of space is done in art by: Aerial Perspective - objects in the distance become lighter Linear Perspective - vanishing point(s) show accurate size changes Size Changes - objects in the distance become smaller Detail - objects in the distance have less detail Overlapping - Objects in the distance have less detail Vertical Location - objects higher in a painting are farther away Value Differences - sky and ground (or water) nearer the horizon line are lighter

Step 1: Choose your name and list as many things that you can think of that you like. If you would prefer to do someone else’s name choose someone you know well and write down all the things you can think of that they like. Step 2: Expand the list to think of more ideas for that person. Example: Julie Dogs Lhasa Apso, Black Lab, Dog House Cats Black Cat Softball Ball, Bat, Helmet, Field, Mitt, Uniform Art Brush, Palette, Pencil, Paint Candy Chocolate, M&M’s Reading Book, book mark Baseball umpire, logo, cap Movies movie reel, movie poster Hamburgers French Fries

Step 3: Sketch out some ideas for each item from the list of the things that your person likes.

Step 4: Draw their name in as many creative ways as you can think of: CAPITAL LETTERS lowercase letters Italics Bubble Lettering Block

Step 5: Draw out a plan. Don’t be afraid to draw. Use the drawing skills I have taught you. Get visual aides (pictures of the objects) if necessary. Be creative!

Step 6: You will start by creating a rough draft of the lettering at the final size. Draw your design larger on butcher paper. Plan ahead, use a ruler to make a margin and to make the letters the same size. If your lettering is irregular in size you want to sketch it out that way.

Step 7: Once you have completed your rough draft the teacher will give you a final paper. Using the light box, trace from the butcher paper onto drawing paper. This will prevent eraser marks and excessive lines for margins, etc. Get all of your images drawn on your paper.

Step 8: Now you are ready to finish your assignment. Be sure to do your best drawing and shading with the colored pencils. Use what you have learned about the elements of art to create your artwork. Make sure that you have CONTRAST in your work. Contrast can be achieved by: Putting warm colors next to cool colors Using small and large shapes Using lighter and darker colors Using a variety of textures Using thick and thin lines BE CREATIVE. TAKE YOUR TIME. USE YOUR CLASS TIME WISELY. YOU CAN DO IT!
