About rights and responsibilities About the Travel Code How the Travel Code applies to you. The focus today is to learn about... By the end of the lesson you should be able to... Describe what the Travel Code is and how it can help you have a safe journey to and from school. Say what might happen if you don’t follow the Travel Code. Explain your rights and responsibilities about travel to and from school.

The right to be safe The right to do what you want The right to education The right to free speech The right to have a seat in a classroom The right to have fun The right to own a mobile phone The right to shop The right to vote The right to watch Premier League football free …that’s enough ‘rights’ for now! Rights? What Rights? Whose Rights?

Responsibilities? If you had the right to own a pet, would you also have responsibilities? Source:

Activity A – Hot Seat! One of you will take on the role of the girl walking to school. One of you will take on the role of the boy cycling to school Some of you will take on the role of the passengers on the bus

Activity A – Hot Seat! Ask questions to those in the Hot Seat Find out what happened Find out how they felt Find out what they thought of the other person Find out what might have happened next.

Activity B – Developing a Travel Code If you were creating a new travel code, what would you say? What your rights areWhat your responsibilities areWhy this is important

To be safe when travelling. To be treated fairly and with respect. To tell someone if somebody or something is causing you problems. Not to be bullied or picked on. Tell a teacher, parent or driver about any poor behaviour or bullying you see. Your Rights

Always respect others, including other learners, drivers and the public. Always respect vehicles and property. Always be polite. Never drop litter. Always obey the law. Tell a teacher, parent or driver about any poor behaviour or bullying you see. Your Responsibility

Your Safety Always behave well throughout your journey. Always follow the driver’s instructions when travelling. You must not distract drivers. Always cross the road safely and sensibly. Always travel by a safe route. Tell a teacher, parent or driver about any poor behaviour or bullying you see. Your Safety

If you do not follow the Travel Code, for your own safety, local authorities, schools and colleges can take action against you. This might involve taking away your right to school transport and even excluding you from school. The Travel Code

Your safety is very important. You must behave responsibly and safely when travelling to and from school, whether you get there by bus, train, taxi, bicycle, walking or any other way. If you get a bus to school, you must also follow the rules in the School Bus Travel Code. The Travel Code

School Bus Travel Code

With a partner Explain what the Travel Code is Now swap over Explain what could happen if the Travel Code is not followed. Activity D – What Have You Learned?
