The Mesopotamian Empires By: Jeron Madsen

The Sumerian Empire  One of the worlds first civilizations formed in the southern part of Mesopotamia.  In each city state the en ruled as the king.  They created the system called cuneiform, or wedged shaped writing.  People belonged to social classes, or groups of same level of importance.

The Akkadian Empire  They had a king named Sargon the Great from 2350 B.C to 2294 B.C.  After he died, the empire lasted more than 200 years.  His son and grandson, Naram-Sin, ruled over the Akkadian empire after he died.  He killed his king and took over all of Sumer.

The Babylonian Empire  They had to follow a code called the Code of Hammurabi.  The code was made he help maintain the empire and establish laws.  For example, if a low class person broke a higher class person’s arm, he shall die.  If a low class person is hurt by a high class person he shall receive something good.  If some one harms a person and they are the same class, he shall be harmed by him.

The Kassites and the Hittites  Kassites tried to conquer the Babylonian Empire for many years.  Hittites robbed the Babylonians and left them defenseless.  The Kassites took advantage of the Babylonian’s loss and took over the Babylonians.  The Hittites used chariots to rob the Babylonian Empire of their riches.

Assyrian Empire  The People of Assur learned warfare, or skill in war, from the Hittites.  The Assyrian King, Sennacherib, had conquered 40 cities.  He named the capital of the Assyrian Empire, Nineveh.  In 612 B.C the Medes attacked Nineveh and killed the king of Assyria.

Neo Babylonian Empire  When the Assyrians were defeated, they were the center of Mesopotamia, again.  They were they New Babylonian Empire (Neo Babylonian Empire).  The capital was where the Neo Babylonian Empire began.  King Nebuchadnezzar built a ziggurat which is now called the Tower of Babel.

What I learned In this chapter I learned about the six empires and the Kassites and Hittites of Mesopotamia and how they did things. I learned about the laws, warfare, weapons, and vehicles that they used. I also l learned about kings like Sargon, Hammurabi, Nebuchadnezzar, and Sennacherib. I learned about the capitals such as Nineveh and Akkad. Finally, about codes such as the Code of Hammurabi, which was fair and unfair.
