Warm Up! What is a NOUN?

Collective Nouns A noun that represents a collection regarded as a unit. Examples: – army – audience – board – cabinet – class – committee – company – corporation – council – department – faculty – family – firm – group – jury – majority – minority – navy – public – senate – society – team – troupe – troop

Collective Nouns Collective nouns also tell about a group of objects. Examples: – dozen muffins – deck of cards – pod of dolphins – tribe of monkeys – herd of cattle – swarm of bees – school of fish

Collective Nouns and Usage: A collective noun takes a singular verb when it refers to the collection considered as a whole. – The family is united on this question. – The enemy is suing for peace. A collective noun takes a plural verb when it refers to the members of the group considered as individuals. – My family are always fighting among themselves. – The enemy was showing up in groups of three or four to turn in their weapons.
