Exploring Real Numbers Lesson 1-3

Real Numbers Rational Numbers Integers Whole Numbers

Irrational Numbers

Natural numbers are the counting numbers

Whole numbers are the nonnegative integers.

Integers are whole numbers and their opposites.

Rational numbers are real numbers that can be written as ratios of two integers. Rational numbers in decimal form are terminating or repeating.

Irrational numbers are numbers that cannot be written as ratios of two integers. Irrational numbers in decimal form are nonterminating and nonrepeating.

Real numbers are numbers that are either rational or irrational.

A counterexample is any example that proves a statement false.

An inequality is A mathematical sentence that compare the values of two expressions using an inequality symbol.

Opposites are numbers that are the same distance from zero on a number line, but that lie in opposite directions.

Absolute value is the distance that a number is from zero on a number line.
