Properties of Addition 1. Commutative Property of Addition 2. Associative Property of Addition 3. Identity Property of Zero for Addition

Properties of Addition 1. Commutative Property of Addition The property of addition that allows two or more addends to be added in any order without changing the sum; a + b = b + a Examples: c + 4 = 4 + c (2 + 5) + 4r = 4r + (2 + 5)

Properties of Addition 2. Associative Property of Addition The property which states that for all real numbers a, b, and c, their sum is always the same, regardless of their grouping: (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) Example: (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4)

Properties of Addition 3. Identity Property of Zero for Addition The property which states that adding zero to a number does not change the number's value Examples: 3 + 0 = 3; 0 + y = y Special example 4 - 4 = 0; x - x = 0

RECAP Properties of Addition 1. Commutative Property of Addition a + b = b + a 2. Associative Property of Addition (a + b) + c = a + (b + c) 3. Identity Property of Zero for Addition 0 + y = y x - x = 0
