Chronicle of a Death Foretold

CHARACTERS SANTIAGO ٠Marquez portrays Santiago as a Christ figure. ٠Santiago isn’t innocent, but he’s not a malevolent character either. ٠Marquez’s attitude toward Santiago is of admiration and pity. Apparently he never knows what he supposedly did wrong. ٠A youthful, blissful playboy. Audience can identify with him. ٠Constantly foreshadows murder to show that it could have been prevented. He didn’t want it either.

CHARACTERS (cont’d) ANGELA VICARIO  The beautiful girl looking for true love.  Always downhearted, with a “poverty of spirit.” Does Marquez pity her?  She’s a dirty one. Marquez implies that she randomly picked Santiago’s name out of many from her head.  Audience develops a feeling of animosity towards her for her actions.

CHARACTERS (cont’d) VICARIO BROTHERS  Vicarious: “Performed, exercised, received, or suffered in place of another: vicarious punishment.”  Suffer for the crimes of their sister, Angela  Beside their crime, they show no signs of violent nature. Marquez criticizes society more than he does them.  Show no remorse after crime was committed, but before, they were looking for someone to stop them.  Acted because of honor and duty. Society imposed it on them. Apparently they had no other choice.

Lack of Religious Piety  Religion is seen heavily throughout the book, but plays a small roll in the lives of the townspeople.  Hypocrisy seen multiple times.  The Bishop’s visit. Makes the sign of the cross “mechanically” and “without malice or inspiration.”  After killing Santiago, the Vicario brothers run to a church.  Ironic names of certain characters.

Immorality of the Town  Márquez shows how backwards and immoral the townspeople are.  Killing in the name of honor.  Men hold double standards in the town.  Everybody knows Santiago’s going to die, but only a handful of people try to stop the killing from happening.  Even Father Carmen Amador knows about the killing.  Townspeople wait and watch for Santiago to die.  Santiago dies to redeem the sins of the townspeople.
