Overall Mission To Enhance the Distinction of the University in the Area of Undergraduate Education.

UCR: A Large Research University With a Highly Diverse Student Body Achieving High Levels of Success. This goal takes advantage of distinctive UCR assets, and creates a pathway for achieving national recognition. Overall Goal

Indices of Student Success  Persistence  GPA  Maintenance of Full Time Enrollment Status  Time to Graduation  National and International Recognitions, Awards, Fellowships  Post Graduation Placement in Distinguished Professional and Graduate Schools, and in Rewarding Careers

Areas of Activity  Academic Initiatives  Program Coordination and Management  Instructional Development  Student Academic Resources

Academic Initiatives  Freshman Writing and Composition  Four Year Graduation and Entry Level Student Success

Freshman Writing & Composition  Subject A Transition  Subject A Permanent Status

Subject A Transition Issues  Will oversee the implementation of the Subject A transitional plan for academic year for students who receive C- or less in a Subject A course during Fall ‘04.  This will involve working with UNEX to accommodate our students through concurrent enrollment. This is an implementation of the mechanism passed by the Academic Senate last Spring for providing those students a pathway for satisfactory completion of the Subject A requirement.

Subject A Transition Team Membership: A.J. Grosovsky, Chair J. Childers, Academic Senate Vice Chair S. Allen-Ortega, Student Affairs L. Lundgren, Student Affairs M. Hull, Academic Planning and Budget P. Oppenheim, Undergraduate Academic Programs E. Papavero, Undergraduate Academic Programs

Subject A Permanent Status Issues  Will determine permanent arrangement to be implemented in Fall ‘05.  Will define working versions of alternate models by the November 2004 to enable adequate time for Senate deliberation.  Will also define models for the future status of English Composition and writing across the curriculum.  Will recommend optimal administrative organization for future management of Subject A.

Academic Senate Ad Hoc Committee on Long-Term Policy for Freshman Composition (including Subject A) Membership: S.E. Cullenberg, Chair (Committee on Planning and Budget) Darleen Demason (Committee on Courses) Lynda Bell, (Committee on Education Policy) Michael Rust, (Committee on Preparatory Education) Carol Lovatt, (Undergraduate Council) Melanie Sperling, (Graduate School of Education) Rise Axelrod, (Dept. of English) ex officio Joe Childers, (Academic Senate Vice Chair) ex officio Andrew Grosovsky, (Vice Provost) ex officio

Entry Level Student Success and Four Year Graduation  Will utilize a set of approaches to address the conversion factor problem while improving student success by developing “Introduction to the Discipline” seminars, workshops, sections, and colloquia.  These will increase student experience in small to moderate class size in the lower division and build on our experience with Freshmen Discovery Seminars.  On-campus and off-campus models for these types of courses will be surveyed in Fall ‘04, and several will be selected for pilot implementation in Fall ‘05.  Review of courses that might be appropriate for increased unit assignment will also be continued.
