What is cinquain poetry? Cinquain poems are five lines long with a certain number of syllables or words in each line. There are many ways to write cinquain poems. Let’s look at some examples… Writing Poetry

Cinquain Poems Cinquain poems are very popular! It is made up of twenty-two syllables in a pattern of 2, 4, 6, 8, 2. In a cinquain, as with any poem, the poet tries to use vivid images to capture a mental picture or a feeling. Writing Poetry

Cinquain Poems Analyze cinquains : Did you notice that the cinquains expressed a thought with very few words? This means the poet must choose his or her words very carefully.

Cinquain Poems Parts of speech cinquains: This type of cinquain contains 5 lines, but it does not limit the poet to a certain number of syllables in each line. Instead, it follows the format on the next slide….

Line 1 is a noun. Line 2 is two words describing the noun. Line 3 contains action words telling what the noun does. Line 4 includes four words about the noun. Line 5 is one word which refers to the first word. Parts of speech cinquains:

Pattern for Cinquain Line 1: Title Line 2: Description of the title. Line 3: Action about the title. Line 4: Feeling about the title. Line 5: Synonym for the title.

Poetcraft: Word Choice A basic skill that poets must work with is word choice. A poet must find the best words for each line of the poem. Sometimes you need to look up words in a thesaurus to find the right word you are looking for to express your thoughts.
