BELL WORK- OCTOBER 3 RD World Language Families- Use the map on pg. 83 to answer the following questions. 1. Which language family is dominant in the regions of North Africa and Southwest Asia? 2. What might explain the same languages being spoken in Europe and North America?

WHAT IS CULTURE? Culture is a way of life of a group of people who share similar beliefs and customs? Languages, Religion, Social Groups, Daily Life, History shared, Art, types of government, economy Social Groups- Each of us belongs to many social groups- Are you young or old? Male or female? A student, worker, or both? Most of these groups have rules of behavior that group members must learn, and how we do that is called socialization. - Family is most important social group in most societies. Ethnic Group- group that share a language, history, religion and some physical traits. - ethnocentrism is the idea that your ethnicity is superior or better than all others.

WHAT IS CULTURE? Language- sharing a language is one of the strongest unifying forces for a culture. There are many variations of languages that are called dialects. Dialect is a local form of language that might have distinct vocabulary or pronunciations. More than 2,000 languages are spoken around the world today, and most can be group with related languages to create a language family. Can you think of an example of dialect?

WHAT IS CULTURE? Religion- in many cultures, religious beliefs helps us answer basic questions about life’s meaning. There are 5 major world religions amongst hundreds in the world. Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, and Judaism- 4.5 billion followers, or more than 2/3 the population.

WHAT IS CULTURE? History- Stories about challenges and successes of a culture support certain values and help people develop pride and community. Cultural Holidays- mark important events and enable people to celebrate their heritage. Can you think of an example of a cultural holiday?

WHAT IS CULTURE? Daily Life- Food, clothing, and shelter are basic human needs. The type of food you eat and how you eat it can reflect your culture. Can you think of specific examples of this? The home you live in and clothing you wear reflect your culture and physical surroundings. High, Chilly Andes Mtns of South America VS. Warm savannas of Africa

WHAT IS CULTURE? Arts- music, painting, sculpture, dance, and literature is how people express what they think is beautiful and meaningful. Art can also tell stories about important figures and events in culture.

WHAT IS CULTURE? Government- People need rules in order to live together without conflict. (Limited Governments) Democracy- power is held by the people. Representative Democracy- people choose leaders to represent them. (Unlimited Governments) Dictatorship- leader rules by force- limits citizens’ freedoms Monarchy- government led by king or queen who inherits power by being born into ruling family.

WHAT IS CULTURE? Economy- economic activities to see how a culture used its resources and trades with other places. Economies success can be seen in people’s quality of life- how ell they eat and live and what kind of health care they receive. What recent technological advancements have led to cultural changes?

CULTURAL CHANGE Cultural Diffusion- process of spreading ideas, languages, or customs from one culture to another. In the past, this happened through trade, migration, and conquest. Now, technology allows for this to happen much easier. Can you think of examples of how this happens?

CULTURAL CHANGE Globalization- development of worldwide culture with and interdependent economy. Individual economies rely greatly upon one another for resources and market. What are some pros/cons of globalization?
