APOSTROPHE  Addressing someone or something as though they are there, but are actually absent, or non existent.  Ex. In class we are going over the exam schedule and someone points out an error and Ms. Cassie says “Silly Mr. Shawn…. You didn’t double check the schedule for mistakes”

APOSTROPHE

CACOPHONY  The use of harsh and unmusical sounds.  Ex. Trudge, brisk, crack  These are words/lines that are difficult to say, you have to slow down to read it accurately

CONSONANCE  The repetition of consonant sounds in the middle of end of the words  Alliteration: sounds at the beginning  Consonance: sounds in the middle or end

COUPLET  Two consecutive lines of poetry which rhyme:

ELEGY  A poem of mourning, usually over the death of an individual.

EUPHEMISM  A mild expression or indirect word substituted for one considered to be too harsh or blunt.

METER  When we look at meter, we are looking at the syllable breakdown in each line of a poem

IAMBIC PENTAMETER  An iamb is 2 syllables that you read in an unstressed-stressed pattern Eg. The DOG \ went TO \ the PARK = 3 iambs Also called “iamb meter”  Iambic pentameter is a form of a poem that is 5 iambs in each line (or 10 syllables

INTERNAL RHYME  When there in rhyme within the line  Ex. You can’t escape the bat when its killed by the cat.

JUXTAPOSITION  Purposely placing close together to contrast such as placing black and white photos beside colour photos.

OCTAVE  And 8 line stanza or an 8 line poem

PASTORAL  A type of poem that deals with an idealized way with shepherds and rustic life.  Moonlight on the Countryside From deep beyond the canyon rim, Appearing at first night; The moon appears upon a whim And relays its borrowed light. Then rising there above the knoll, Through wisps of misty white; The moonlight falls as flakes of snow Upon the countryside.

PUN  The use of a word or phrase to suggest two or more meanings at the same time. Puns are generally humorous.

QUATRAIN  A stanza of four lines, usually with alternating rhymes.

SATIRE  The literary art of diminishing a subject by making it ridiculous and evoking towards it attitudes of amusement, contempt, or scorn.

SESTET  A 6 line Stanza.  Review!  2 line stanza that rhyme - ?  4 line stanza?  6 line stanza?  8 line stanza?
