Sources of Social Change Modern world changes at a rapid rate New ideas challenge existing ideas Many factors stimulate change

Values & Beliefs “ a change in one aspect of society produces changes throughout the system” Ideology = system of beliefs or ideas that justifies some moral, religious or economic interests These are spread through Social movements = long term effort to promote / prevent social change

Involve lots of people ex… Prohibition, Civil Rts.,Gay Rts., Women’s movement Beth wake up !

Technology l People find new ways to manipulate there environment l Technology = Knowledge and tools that people use to manipulate environment l Discovery = new uses for existing elements

l Ex... Atomic fission, oil shale l Invention = people use existing knowledge to create some thing new l Can be objects, ideas, or patterns

Population l A change in the size of the population brings changes in culture l Increase in U.S. population 20th cent. l Increase in housing, energy, school,food l Affects economies - employment l -stimulate economy

Diffusion l Diffusion =spreading cultural traits from one society to another l Learn ideas,acts, beliefs of others l The more contact the more ideas borrowed l Mass transportation,instant communication = borrow many traits That’s all Folks !
