PPE Personal Protective Equipment

Purpose of PPE n To shield or isolate the individual from chemical, physical, or biological hazards that may be encountered. –Acute injuries –Chronic Illnesses –Comfort

When To Use PPE n Engineering Controls n Administrative Controls n PPE

Levels of Protection Level A Level B Level C Level D

Upgrading and Downgrading n Hazard Assessment is crucial and required under OSHA’s PPE standard. n A Hazard Assessment is crucial prior to and during the Emergency Response. n Health is the overriding reason for Upgrade or Downgrade- NEVER MONEY!

WHAT PPE DO WE USE? n Penetration n Degradation n Breakthrough Time n Permeation Rate

We Need to Know the Following Before we can Determine What PPE to Wear. n What form is the contaminant? n How toxic is the substance? n What is the individual’s sensitivity to the hazard? n Can you taste or smell the contaminant so you can tell if there has been a breakthrough? n What is the concentration of the substance? n How long will the worker be exposed to the substance?

Risk Assessment 1.What are the harmful effects of the materials or chemicals? 2.What form is it in? 3.What other dangers are involved? 4.How do the conditions of work allow the material to come in contact with the workers?

Head Protection n Hard Hats Checked regularly No cracks, broken suspension or flaws. Suspension is very important!

Face Protection n Eye Protection –Glasses side shields Z-87 –Goggles dusty, chemicals n Face shield

Safety Foot Wear n Steel Toe n Rubber or Chemical

Hand Protection n Cloth/Leather n Chemical

How to Remove Gloves

Clothing Common materials used. Seam Construction Other Types

Respirators n Escape –1 use or 1 year n Filtering –Fit test –Fit check n Supplied Air –SCBA

These are worn when working in dusty areas or when working with chemicals above the PEL Return

Three reasons why the use of PPE is necessary. Return

These must be permanently affixed to the Z-87 frame to be considered OSHA approved. Return

What are the first two steps of the OSHA hierarchy of PPE use? Return

The level of protection where the SCBA is worn on the outside of the suit. Return

When upgrading or downgrading PPE levels this should never be a consideration. Return

When a chemical flows through zippers, stitches, seams or pores of chemical protective clothing,. Return

Your face must be smooth as a baby’s bottom to ride in one of these Return

What must be done prior to choosing the PPE you wear. Return

A type of seam that is normally used in Level A suits, it is formed by using heat and melts the fabric together without sewing. Return

The most underused piece of PPE. Return

Level of Protection When Chemicals are Unknown. Return
