Presentation transcript:

Poetry communicates ways that are often more condensed, more suggestive and more emotional Definition of poetry form- The way its language is arranges in lines Elements of poetry form Rhythm Rhyme Arrangement of lines Form can range from fixed and prescribed to free and irregular

Some of our favorite poems tend to strike a chord of recognition: they make connections with how we see the world.

Poetic forms fall into two categories Conventional form Organic form

Conventional form follows certain fixed rules. (Fixed Form) They have a limited number of lines Specified meter and rhyme scheme A definite structure Examples of conventional form poetry: Sonnet Ballad Epic Elegy Ode Villanelle Blank Verse

This form of poetry developed in the early 19 th century English romantic poets wanted more flexible verse forms Takes shape and pattern from the content of the poem itself The form of poem “grows” naturally out of what the poem says

Different from conventional and other organic forms Lacks regular meter and rhyme Free verse still uses rhythm but not in the regular patterns of meter Depends largely on other sound devices besides rhyme to achieve musical effects Uses various types of repetition

Master of free verse in American poetry Created a new form of poetic song Poems lack meter, but provides a recognizable cadence by repeating words Uses Anaphora- same word or phrase repeated at the beginning of two or more lines Whitman referred to free-verse as “ Barbaric Yawps” Whitman’s revolutionary poems were first published in Most poets did not agree with his use of free-verse in the 19 th century, but it later caught on with poets of the 20 th century and is one of the most widely used forms of poetry today.

When reading poems we need to consider: What appealing imagery does the poet use? What message does the poem convey? How does the poem make you feel? What techniques does the poet use to create the mood of the poem?

Why do you like some poems more than others? What is your favorite poem and what do you like about it? Write a journal entry thinking about these two questions and answer both questions thoroughly…about 1 page hand- written.
