Subject Verb Agreement Rule 3: Two singular subjects connected by or, either/or, or neither/nor require a singular verb. *Hint* Find the subject(s) and look at the words surrounding them that might modify their number. Example: My brother or my sister is arriving at 2pm today. What you are really reading: (2 individual possibilities) My brother is arriving at 2pm today. My sister is arriving at 2pm today.

Examples: Neither Carlos nor Christie is available. (singular) What are you really reading? Carlos is not available. Christie is not available. Either Erin or Aaron is helping today with play decorations. (singular) Erin is helping today with play decorations. Aaron is helping today with play decorations.

Subject Verb Agreement Rule 4: The verb in an or, either/or, or neither/nor sentence agrees with the noun/pronoun closest to it. Example: Neither the laptops nor the Xbox goes on that shelf. Xbox is singular and is closest to the verb “to go” Let’s switch it around. Neither the Xbox nor the laptops go on that shelf.

Examples – Explain your choice. Jim and Doris (was, were) the singers in the band. Neither Carl nor Amanda (has, have) ever been to Carlsbad Caverns. Either Janice or the children (was, were) playing with the oven. Ghada or Alex (is, are) a full-time employee of Starbucks. Chips and salsa (is, are) my favorite snack.
