2.17 Interpreting Style (Edward Scissorhands) Create a chart with 2 columns in your spiral: Observation and Interpretation. Label this first set of notes as Opening Credits. As you view the opening credits, jot down notes about what you observe about the opening. Identify significant cinematic techniques, as well as what is being depicted. Once I pause the film, you will be writing out your predictions about what you think this film will be about based on the opening credits, as well as the overall mood and tone being set by the opening credits.

2.17 Interpreting Style (Edward Scissorhands) Part 2 The story of Edward Scissorhands is introduced in the “frame story” of the movie: an old woman prepares to narrate the story of Edward to her granddaughter. Other examples of “frame story” include the movie Titanic where the elderly Rose is telling her story and in the movie The Princess Bride where a book is being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson. Watch this section closely, paying close attention to the camera movements. Draw a horizontal line in your chart to begin the new segment of notes in your chart - title it “Frame Story.” Take your observation notes in the observation column. After viewing the scene write out your response to the musical changes, camera movements and frame story. Focus on the effect of each.
