When, where, and why was the Massachusetts Bay Colony founded? Founded in 1630 Boston, just north of Plymouth Puritans/non-seperatists Did not want to break away Wanted to purify the church

When, where, and why was the Massachusetts Bay Colony founded When, where, and why was the Massachusetts Bay Colony founded? Continued Theocracy: the idea that government is based on religious principles. not tolerant of other views.

What role did John Winthrop play in the founding of the Massachusetts Bay colony? John Winthrop was the governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. Initially, he and select few made the laws for the colony, but that was soon changed and all freemen where permitted to vote. Town meetings would become the local form of government. Though not all participants could vote, the Town Hall meeting was a place for discussion and debate, thus reinforcing the idea of self-government in America.

Roger Williams and Anne Hutchinson Roger Williams was a minister who believed Native Americans had rights to land. He was forced to leave, founding the colony of Rhode Island, which was the first place in America to practice religious toleration. Anne Hutchinson was a woman that disagreed with the Puritans about how and where to worship. She too was banished from Massachusetts for preaching at home. She eventually found her way to Rhode Island.

Thomas Hooker Thomas Hooker was a minster who founded the colony of Connecticut in the 1639 because he also disagreed with the Puritan practices (voting rights). They drafted the Fundamental Orders of Connecticut, the first written constitution in America reflecting the democratic principles previously established in the Mayflower Compact and House of Burgesses.

Salem Witch Trials The witchcraft trials occurred in 1692 in Salem, Massachusetts. During this time hundreds of women, and some men, were accused of being witches creating a atmosphere of hysteria and fear Practicing witchcraft was of course against the law and 19 people were put to death for the crime. Eventually, the accusations that started the event would be proven false and witchcraft would cease to be persecuted by the government
