EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Significant Planning Assumptions: Technical  Technical Assumptions  Minimal adaptation of ABS  Evaporation purification  Two Purifiers  Volume Displacement System  Pressurization of cell to 1 atm  Diffusive 3 He flow  0 pumps. 1 V1 valve/cell  All actuators use “Heliomatic” mechanism for 300 K to 4 K  A certain model for interconnection

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Other Significant Planning Assumptions:  Procurement  Hardware is ordered from vendors (build to drawing).  Local technical support at collaborating institutions not used. It’s hard to estimate without a firm design.  This is wrong but…  Manpower  Engineering by Bartoszek Engineering (more later)  Work package leaders assumed, but not all confirmed  Local technical support used for installation and testing.  Testing  All systems must be successfully tested before arrival at ORNL  Tests take place in parallel at different locations.

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Interfaces  DAQ  Slow controls  Cryostat/Cryogenic Services  Mechanical support  Instrumentation and motion feed-through  50 K, 4 K, 0.3 K thermal links  Coils and Magnetic shielding  Upper cryostat cos(  ) holding field  Over-all magnetic model  Measurement Cell Insert  Interface to V1 valve body/stem  Plumbing connections into inner volume He3S Interfaces With MANY Subsystems

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Technical Scope Definition Issues  Resolution of many technical issues could totally change the scope (see Technical Assumptions).  Example: If evaporation purification found to not be practical  purifier work package would be completely different.  Important materials issue: 3 He Friendliness (more info needed – not just for dTPB, but teflon, nylon, DryFilm,…  Interfaces! (Where does He3S end?)

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Equipment Performance Issues  Injection polarization (90%)  Injection efficiency (How much 3 He enters the LHe?)  Relaxation time in the collection volume (100 s)  Polarized 3 He loading time (1000 s)  Quality of purification ( He atoms/cc)  Time required to purify  Regeneration frequency  Valve lifetime (5000 cycles)  Superfluid leak tightness (valves, joints)  3 He friendliness of plumbing (pol = 80% at the cell)  Heat load to DR 

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Schedule Estimates  The schedule driven by the manpower allocated to engineering.  The work-package level Gantt chart with no leveling:

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Staffing Plans/Issues  Key People Needed:  Work package leaders need to be confirmed. Possibly new leaders identified  Some additional engineering will be necessary  Identifying in-house technical skills and capabilities may allow less outside work – could save money.  Special skills (e.g. glass blowing) may be required.

EDMEDM EDM Fast Start, May 23, 2006He3S, Steven Williamson Procurement Planning  The largest single items to be procured are the valve actuators  $30k  Need 8 for valves and 2 more for bellows.  In actuality these may be built of smaller parts purchased separately: Warm actuator$2.5k Feed-through from warm to 4K piston and cylinder$5.0k 4K piston and cylinder in upper cryostat$10.0k 4K piston and cylinder on 4K shield$10.0k Gaseous Hydraulic plumbing between cylinders$2.5k Total$30.0k  Next largest items are SQUID electronics and pumps (~$20k)
