THE AMERICAN COLONIES EMERGE

JAMESTOWN (VA) First permanent English settlement

JAMESTOWN (VA) Early Troubles: – None of the colonists knew how to raise livestock – Upper class refused to do manual labor – They didn’t know how to fish or hunt for food

STRUGGLES WITH NATIVE AMERICANS Bacon’s Rebellion – Raised own army to attack natives – Ended up marching on Jamestown – Result: convinced many wealthy planters to allow all free men to vote

PURITAN NEW ENGLAND Puritans – Church members who wanted to “purify”/reform Church of England – Immigrated to America to escape depression in England’s wool industry

PILGRIMS Landed in Plymouth in 1620 Were Separatists who fled from England to escape persecution

MASSACHUSETTS BAY COLONY 1630 John Winthrop establish Mass. Bay Colony Roger Williams challenged “forced religion” – fled to Rhode Island & started own town – Separation of church & state

SETTLEMENT OF THE MIDDLE COLONIES William Penn & the Quakers establish Pennsylvania – Equality, cooperation, & religions toleration Dutch establish New Netherlands (New York) but English would take over
