 Dimmesdale goes to the scaffold where Hester lived before committing her sin.  He waits for someone to throw rotten fruit, no one does. He tries to get peoples attention but the only ones looking at him are Governor Bellingham and his sister.  Mistress Hibbins hears him but she thinks its just her neighbor. He calms down and realizes his friend and clergyman Mr. Wilson are coming.  Dimmesdale imagines what would happen if he was still there by morning and what the town would think about seeing his minister as a sinner.  He calls Pearl and she answers. Them and Hester head back to Governor Winthrop’s house. There she measures him so she can make his robe.  There is a bright light that symbolizes something. The minister puts his hand over his heart. Pearl points at the light and Dimmesdale sees a big letter A marked in the red light.  He sees Chillingworth and notices he looks evil.  Chillingworth is as mad as he can be.  He started planning his revenge but he should not bother because Dimmesdale is hurting himself enough for both of them.  Dimmesdale figures there is something wrong with Chillingworth but his truth is something he shouldn’t trust because he is a sinner himself.  Everyone venerates him and he cant deal with it.  Even when he tells them how vile he is. He has gone up to the pulpit many times for confession but he repented. Instead of confessing, Dimmesdale commits acts of penance like beating himself mercilessly all night in a secret room. As hard as he tries to hit himself he cant purify the sin. Every night he has dreams of Hester pointing at her and his letter. Apparently we know who the father of the baby is. He gets up, leaves the house and walk into the dark. Irony  The man of the cloth—who knows of his own sin and suffers greatly for it—is closer to God's will in that he recognizes his sin—which Chillingworth does not—and spends long, painful hours in penitence. In deed, from Dimmesdale comes something valuable, even in light of sin.

Activity  Draw or write about how your way of revenge would be if you were in Chillingworth's place.
