Seminar Agenda oEffective Note-taking oTest-taking Strategies oCase Study oReview of Unit 3 Assignments oQuestion and Answers

The Writing Process What steps are involved in the writing process? Which of these steps do you feel is most important and why? Why is writing well so important?

The Writing Process The writing process is composed of four main steps. These steps are: 1. Prewriting (coming up with an idea to write about and brainstorming)

The Writing Process 2. Drafting (putting ideas and thoughts into sentences and paragraphs) 3. Revising (modifying, adjusting, and/or improving ideas and style of content)

The Writing Process 4.Editing (correcting grammar, mechanics, and/or spelling errors) How can understanding the four steps of the writing process help you to write more effectively?

The Writing Process The Kaplan University Writing Center is a great resource for all students enrolled at KU. It provides information, samples of work, and offers proofreading services to help students improve their writing.

The Writing Process If you have had an opportunity to visit Kaplan’s Writing Center, what did you find most interesting? How will you utilize this information in your chosen profession?

The Writing Process How will writing well be an asset to you in your career? How will you use good writing skills in your chosen profession? Provide specific examples.

Case of Charlotte Charlotte, who is a freshman at Kaplan University, would like to pursue a career as a social worker. She is a great listener, has a strong desire to help people, and enjoys using her critical thinking skills to assess and evaluate different information.

Case of Charlotte Charlotte knows that there is a lot of writing required in her desired position. She will have to create case histories for her clients, write reports, and develop social plans.

Case of Charlotte She is also aware that there will be a lot of writing required in her degree program. The problem is that Charlotte does not feel confident about her writing.

Case of Charlotte It has been several years since she was in high school and, because she does not feel confident with her writing skills, she has the tendency to wait until the late minute to complete her writing assignments.

Case of Charlotte Due to her procrastination and lack of confidence with the writing process, she has received mediocre grades on her writing assignments so far this term.

Case of Charlotte Charlotte is motivated to get her degree and to move forward into this exciting career field, but is concerned about her insecurities when it comes to writing.

Case of Charlotte Charlotte knows that she wants to be a social worker and wants to do well in her classes, but is intimidated by the writing process. What should Charlotte do to improve her writing skills?

Case of Charlotte As we learned in our reading this week, all authors are faced with the choices of topic, language, and organization. How will understanding these choices help Charlotte with her writing assignments?

Credible Resources When is the last time that you visited your local library? What was your purpose for visiting?

Credible Resources The Internet has become one of the most popular and easily accessed resources available in the academic and professional realm.

Credible Resources Finding quality and reliable information on the Internet is as important for you as a student as it will be for you as a professional. How will it be important for your as a professional?

Credible Resources Applying critical thinking skills while conducting research on the Internet can help you find credible and reliable sources of information to support your own thoughts and ideas.

Credible Resources Ask these important questions when determining the credibility of a resource: 1.Who is the author? 2.When was it written? 3.Why was it written?

Credible Resources What is the significance of asking who is the author? Why is the date of a resource significant? Why is it important to know why a resource was written?
