NOTE: In the case where the crude oil is very viscous so that mixing would be difficult, the toluene may be added to the tube first to facilitate mixing. 4Place stopper in tube and shake vigorously. 5Loosen stopper slightly and immerse tube to the 100-ml mark for at least 15 minutes in the 140°F bath. 6Remove tube and wipe dry. 7Secure stopper and invert tube 10 times to ensure uniform mixing of sample with solvent. 8Release stopper to relieve any pressure and resecure. 9Place tube in centrifuge and ensure centrifuge is balanced by placing an equally weighted tube in opposite cup position in centrifuge. 10Spin sample for 3 minutes in centrifuge. 11Immediately after centrifuge comes to rest, read and record the combined volume of water and sediment at the bottom of tube. EquipmentMaterials and Reagents  Centrifuge (conforming to requirements of ASTM D4007)  Centrifuge Tubes (conforming to dimensions given in ASTM D4007)  Water Bath (140±5°F)  Demulsifier (soln. 25% v/v in toluene)  ACS Certified Toluene Scope / Objective This procedure describes the determination of water and sediment in crude oil. Equal volumes of crude oil and water-saturated toluene are placed into a cone-shaped centrifuge tube. After centrifugation, the volume of higher density water and sediment layer at bottom of rube is read. Note: This procedure is only valid at the time of printing. The control version can be found on the Meraux Refinery intranet. Completed Date:Prepared By:Approved By:

AreaUnitOperating Procedure #Certified byRevision #DatePage 3LabOPS-LB-PS of 2 Basic Sediment and Water by Centrifuge Continued 12If a clear break cannot be determined between the water plus sediment and sample, add a few drops of demulsifier and respin. NOTE: Sample temperature must be maintained at a minimum of 125°F so that paraffins remained dissolved reheat sample in bath if needed to maintain temperature prior to re-spinning. 13After taking initial reading, return tube without agitation to the centrifuge and spin for an additional 3 minutes. 14 Repeat this operation until the combined volume of water and sediment remains constant for 2 consecutive readings. a.If the difference between the 2 readings is greater than 1 subdivision on the centrifuge tube or mls for readings ≤ 0.10 ml, consider the readings inconsistent. 15Take the sum of the 2 consistent readings and report as the percentage by volume of water and sediment. Note: This procedure is only valid at the time of printing. The control version can be found on the Meraux Refinery intranet. Completed Date:Prepared By:Approved By:
