Presentation transcript:

Welcome to Charting the Text!!! -teaching students how to investigate text structure Dispatch: Please start reading and “Marking the Text” on the article “Girls Aren’t Afraid…..” Give 5 minutes to read and mark the text….review markings and GIST of the article-30 second speech. Objectives- Discuss and dissect the “Charting the Text” reading strategy Create a plan to effectively use “Charting the Text”

What is the article about?? Getting the GIST With a partner, come up with a 20 words or less statement answering the question: What is the article about??

Going Deeper with Charting the Text- Great supplement after “Marking the Text” or on its own CCSS Reading Anchor Standards: 5-Analyze the structure of texts…. 6-assess how point of view or purpose shapes the content and style of text CCSS Writing Anchor Standards: 1-Write arguments to support claims…. 2-Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas Math Practice Std: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.

What is the author saying? Paragraph 1 : What is the author saying? Write it on the left side What is the author doing? Starting with a verb, write a brief statement in the right margin that explains what the author is doing- Begin with a verb like… explaining… using… describing… illustrating… showing… arguing… giving…. summarizing… See pg. 107 in packet for extra guidance Do paragraphs 3 and 4 with a partner….page 2 on own. 10 minutes.

Micro vs. Macro Structure Please take 2 minutes to read pg 98 of your packet. What’s the difference between Micro and Macro structure analysis? What would be the pros and cons of each? How does the choice affect what students get out of a text?

Our Article Let’s Chunk it: Draw a line under the following paragraphs: P2 P5 P6 How would examining the macro structure change our process and understanding? Use doc camera to model.

No Paper?? No Problem!!!! Saying Doing ¶/Section Tell guests that students if they cant do the charting directly on the text they just make a chart of their own on paper.

Modifications for the Textbook Grab your content’s textbook and pick a chapter you have students learn from. Does the structure of the textbook lend itself to Micro or Macro Analysis?? Or both depending on length of reading?

Now your turn!! Pick a text or pages from the textbook and start to plan a charting the text lesson.

Summarizing using charting Using your charting statements, craft a concise summary for each page/part in the text. Put them altogether with transitions to have one summary for all . Say Do P1: The author decided to play piano instead of bass because she was a girl. P2: Recent research from Psychological Science shows that girls are anxious about math but because they think they are supposed to be. -Sharing a personal story from her childhood that was affected by gender. -Explaining current research findings to show that girls think they should be worried about math. According to Meghan Neal, current research shows that girls do have anxiety about math, but only because think they are supposed to. The author also shares a personal story about how she decided to play piano instead of the bass because of the pressure to do what her gender is supposed to. 10

What else can we do once students are done charting??
