NCHN Conference Network Planning San Diego, California April 14-17, 2008

Strategic Planning: What is it? 1. Determines where a network is going over the next year or more 2. Identifies how the network is going to get there, and 3. Reports how the network will know if it got there or not

Strategic Planning Engagement: 1. The focus of a strategic plan is usually on the entire network 2. Led by the organization’s leadership 3. Requires several meetings or concentrated pre-work

Approaching Strategic Planning 1. Goal-based planning 2. Focus on the network’s mission (vision and values as well) 3. Identify clear goals that tie to the mission 4. Indicate strategies to achieve the goals 5. Focus on action planning (who and by when)

Value Proposition of Strategic Planning 1. Clarifies the network’s plans 2. Allows a focus on the broad perspective and relief from firefighting 3. Ensures that all the stakeholders are identified 4. Allows all key leaders and stakeholders to be “on the same page” 5. Identifies the road to success and the time it may take

Success: 1. Forget perfection. There is only best thinking at this time 2. Forget the “plan.” The process of engaging the stakeholders is the key. 3. Remember the process improvement. Capture the learnings! 4. Simplicity rules. 5. The driving question: Is this realistic?
