Created by Mr. Hemmert

The Scientific Method involves a series of steps that are used to investigate a natural occurrence. It’s a process used by scientists (everyone/anyone) to determine a solution. Method means there is a consistent and reproducible way of doing something. If you need to determine a solution then you must have a problem.

1. State the problem 2. Gather information about the problem (Observation/Research) 3. Formulate a hypothesis Suggested solution to the problem (not an educated guess because you use information from step Design/Conduct and Experiment 5. Collect and Analyze Results/Data 6. Form a conclusion based on data and determine whether hypothesis was correct or incorrect with support data. 7. Communicate the results.

A Closer Look  We shall take a closer look at these steps and the terminology you will need to understand the scientific method.

Steps of the Scientific Method 1. Problem/Question: Develop a question or problem that can be solved through experimentation.

Steps of the Scientific Method 2. Observation/Research: Make observations and research your topic of interest.

Steps of the Scientific Method 3. Formulate a Hypothesis: Predict a possible answer to the problem or question.  Example: If soil temperatures rise, then plant growth will increase.

Steps of the Scientific Method 4. Experiment: Develop and follow a procedure. Include a detailed materials list.

Experimental Process (Step 4) What is an experiment? An experiment is a test between two or more “groups” Terms: Experimental Group: a group in which the suggested solution is applied too Control Group: a group which is give “normal” conditions Variable: the thing that is different between the experimental and control groups

What is the VARIABLE? Control Experimental

Steps of the Scientific Method 5. Collect and Analyze Results: Modify the procedure if needed. Confirm the results by retesting. Include graphs, tables, and photographs.

Steps of the Scientific Method 6. Conclusion: Include a statement that accepts or rejects the hypothesis. Make recommendations for further study and possible improvements to the procedure.

Steps of the Scientific Method 7. Communicate the Results: Be prepared to present the project to an audience.
