 Niels Bohr was born on October 7, 1885 and died on November 18, 1962  Niels Bohr’s full name was Niels Henrik David Bohr.  Niels lived in Copenhagen, Denmark.  Niel had many children that we named Aage Bohr, Ernest Bohr, Erik Bohr, Hans Henrik Bohr, Harald Bohr, and Christian Bohr.

 Niels Bohr had many models that he helped contribute to modern physics.  The Bohr Model is probably familiar as the "planetary model"  It is also used as the atomic symbol.  Atoms can make transitions between the orbits allowed by quantum mechanics by absorbing or emitting exactly the energy difference between the orbits. The following figure shows an atomic excitation cause by absorption of a photon and an atomic de-excitation caused by emission of a photon.

Niels Bohr went to college and studied at the university of Copenhagen University. Niels studied the subject all his years in college and earned his doctorate in physics in 1911 from Copenhagen University. This is what Copenhagen looked like in the year of 1911, the year he graduated.

Bohr was the first to discover that electrons travel in separate orbits around the nucleus and that the number of electrons in the outer orbit determines the properties of an element.

According to his liquid droplet theory, a liquid drop provides an accurate representation of an atom's nucleus. This theory was important in the first attempts to split uranium atoms in the 1930s, a huge step in the development of the atomic bomb.

This theory states that an electron can be viewed in two ways, either as a particle or as a wave, but never both at the same time. Bohr's contributions to the study of quantum mechanics are forever memorialized at the Institute for Theoretical Physics at Copenhagen University, which he helped found in 1920 and headed until his death in It has since been renamed the Niels Bohr Institute in his honor.

Niels Bohr had his own stamp created after him that honored his theory, it was the 50 th anniversary stamp. Niels Bohr has his own element named after him, bohrium (Bh)! This element is number 107 on the periodic table.
