Mechanism of Coordination, support measures and the role of IAEA in implementing applications of electron beam technology in Member States Sunil Sabharwal

IAEA-NA activities in support of Radiation Processing Technology Capacity Building Technical Cooperation Projects – Regional & National Fostering Relevant Developments and Dissemination of Information, Technology Transfer Coordinated Research Projects (CRP) Thematic Topical Meetings (Technical & Consultancy) IAEA/ICTP Workshops, Schools Collaborating Centres Publication of Technical Reports and Documents Support to International Meetings IMRP, IRaP, Miller, Tihany… Collaboration with International Organizations EU – 7 framework COST Action International Irradiation Association (iiA) UNIDO, UNEP 11TH TIHANY SYMPOSIUM ON RADIATION CHEMISTRY

IAEA- Institutional advantages  Global membership and high legitimacy  Can establish strong collaborations at regional and inter-regional level  Strong convening power  Neutrality in assessments and research  Bottom-up requests to collaborate from partners  Extensive knowledge networks / centres: academia, private sector, etc.

IAEA INITIATIVES Fostering Relevant Development and Dissemination of information, Technology Transfer – Coordinated Research Projects – Thematic Meetings – Collaborating Centres – Publication of Technical Reports – IAEA Workshops/Schools – Support to Conferences/Meetings

IAEA INITIATIVES Capacity Building in Member States – National TC Projects – Regional TC Projects – Inter Regional TC Projects

Capacity Building Projects may comprise one or more of the following components: equipment and materials, fellowships and scientific visits, expert missions training courses, meetings/workshops Philippines- Electron Beam facility Sri Lanka, Azerbaijan, Moldova, Cuba- Gamma Radiation facility Morocco, Jordan, - Up-gradation of existing gamma radiation facility Korea, Republic of – Mobile electron beam accelerator (KAERI)

Recent Coordinated Research Projects Development of Novel Adsorbents and Membranes by Radiation- Induced Grafting for Selective Separation Purposes ( ) Completed Development of Radiation-processed Products of Natural Polymers for Application in Agriculture, Healthcare, Industry and Environment ( ) Nanoscale Radiation Engineering of Advanced Materials for Potential Biomedical Applications ( ) Radiation Treatment of Wastewater for Reuse with Particular Focus on Wastewaters Containing Organic Pollutants ( ) Nanocomposites ( ) Cultural Heritage (2015- Proposed)

Guidelines and Publications Trends in Radiation Sterilization of Health Care Products (2008) ISBN Guidebook on the Use of Mathematical Modelling in Electron Beam Processing www-pub.iaea.org/MTCD/publications/PDF/Pub1474_Web.pdf Guidelines for development, validation and routine control of industrial radiation processes (in press) ( Development of Novel Adsorbents and Membranes by Radiation- induced Grafting for Selective Separation in Environmental and Industrial Applications” Radiation Technology Report No. 3.(2012)

Regional Projects REGIONAL ASIA AND PACIFIC: Radiation Processing for Development of Advanced Grafted Materials for Industrial Application and Environmental Preservation. Supporting the Establishment of Industrial Dosimetry Inter- comparison Programme. REGIONAL EUROPE: Introduction and harmonization of standardized quality control procedures in radiation technologies. Using nuclear techniques for the characterization and preservation of cultural heritage artifacts in the Europe Region. REGIONAL AFRICA: Strengthening National Radiation Processing Capabilities in the use of natural polymeric materials for agricultural applications, environmental remediation, and health care products development.

Events Organized by IAEA SATELLITE MEETING ON “Applications of Electron Accelerators: Prospects and Challenges” Accelerator Development for Industrial applications: Low, Medium and High Energy Accelerators and X- ray Generation Application of Electron accelerators in Industry, Food and Agriculture Sector Electron Accelerators for Tackling Environmental Pollutants Advanced Materials Produced by Electron Accelerators Clean and Energy Saving Surface Coating and Printing Techniques by Electron Accelerators Proposed IAEA Conference in 2017

The Challenges in Radiation Technology Astute Selection of areas of applications Addressing Market in a coherent manner Need for enhanced industry wide communication Trained Professionals

Present Focus Initiatives in development of new generation compact accelerators (2015) Quality management of radiation facilities Development of standardized procedures and harmonization of the process validation and process control- Regional Projects in Europe, and Arasia Region. Development of radiation technologies for treatment of threats from biohazard contamination that could be introduced either deliberately or inadvertently. Treatment of volatile organic compounds and other hazardous chemical agents present in flue gases. Treatment of wastewaters containing persistent organic pollutants. Radiation processing of natural polymers for value addition. Development of radiation grafted materials for use in industry and for environmental remediation. Use of radiation technology for conservation and of cultural heritage. Radiation synthesized nano-materials for catalytic and sensing applications. The role of the IAEA has been crucial both in supporting the development of local capabilities as well as in fostering international cooperation due to the multidisciplinary expertise required for achieving sustainable benefits.

Thank you!
